Definition of EAL

A CYP has EAL if they have been exposed to a language other than English during early development and continue to be exposed to this language in the home or in the community.

CYP with EAL may be fluent in English. They may have been born in the UK. They may speak more than two languages. It is important to have a full picture of a CYP's home languages to ensure we can celebrate and utilise all of their language abilities.

Use an EAL Framework to assess language level and identify gaps. This can help to inform the Support Plan. Revisit the framework every half-term to monitor progress.

Buddy/Mentor

Pair the CYP with a peer who is fluent in both languages, if possible. This can help the new arrival to feel more comfortable and facilitate communication. If this is not possible a trained buddy or welcoming pupil can be just as effective in making the child feel welcomed.

The Young Interpreters Scheme is a great way to train children to be empathetic language buddies.
