The beasts stop him from getting closer to god, he is unable to climb, so he has to go through hell in order to get close to him, God reaches out. Dark wood of error= trials, failure, sin, he is 70 years old. Beasts represent 3 worldly sins, lust pride, and greed.

70= only happiness after you embrace a lesson, he is only halfway through that so he can't have happiness
