The 1950s family home was also very different from our own. Housework was much more difficult, as for example people did their washing by hand, instead of in a machine, and with refrigerators being a luxury item for most people, food had to be bought daily. It was less common for married women to work and many took on the childcare and housework, while their husbands went to work.

#family #Childcare

Did Barbie influence stereotypes against women?

Barbie- Barbie was invented in the late 50s and had a positive and negative impact on women. Although it may be silly to us that a toy doll affected women immensely, barbie reflected the present. This put more pressure on housewives immediately because of Barbie’s appearance. Housewives already had strict rules on what they are expected to wear, but when Barbie came out all men expected their spouses to look exactly like Barbie. Perfect outfit, fancy hair, super thin, and effortlessly elegant makeup. New version of Barbie, but where the men control the women. Enough with the negative, it was also a good thing for women. Well younger girls were playing with their Barbie dolls, it showed them that girls could do anything. Since Barbie was a lawyer, pilot, doctor, police officer, architect, engineer, and even more it gave young girls the mindset that it was okay to stand out and work hard for what you want. Although Barbie may have created a stereotype on women for men, in the long run it changed to what can women not do.
“We had all won a fashion magazine contest, by writing essays and stories and poems and fashion blurbs, and as prizes they gave us jobs in New York for a month, expenses paid, and piles and piles of free bonuses, like ballet tickets and passes to fashion shows and hair stylings at a famous expensive salon and chances to meet successful people in the field of our desire and advice about what to do with our particular complexions” (3 Plath).
Explanation- Women can make careers out of doing things that they enjoy. Times have changed, girls can make careers out of how they look while having educational experiences and successes like Barbie.

#Barbieisslay #Women #dollpower

Women became independent on the man that came into their life. This hurts them the long run, due to not having any type of say involved outside of their lives or inside of their home. Women are almost brainwashed into thinking that they can’t be anything more than a girl in a kitchen their solely for the purpose of feeding their family and simply just taking care of them.
Bell Jar Esther- “So I began to think maybe it is true that when you were married and had children it was like being brainwashed, and afterward you went about numb as a slave in some private, totalitarian state” (85 Plath).

#becomearobot #nosay #youokaysis?
