Important Equipment

1) A two-volume edition of Linnaeus - I say this is important because without it they couldn’t name new species. Also they would need

2) 1 long-barreled rifle that fired its bullet with compressed air, rather than by flint, spark and powder - This is important because of one reason. They wouldn’t have to take much more stuff other than sheets of lead for bullets.

3) 420 pounds of sheet lead for bullets - Obviously like I stated before, this is important for the previous item on the list. Without this there would be no ammunition.

4) 33 pounds of tiny beads of assorted colors - This item is important because they needed something to offer to the indians. What’s better than beads for them to make necklaces.

5) 150 yards of cloth to be oiled and sewn into tents and sheets - This item is important because without it they wouldn’t have a proper camp. Plus, this will allow them to make somewhere to sleep, plus some sheets to cover themselves at night.

6) 30 steels for striking to make fire - Firesteels are important so they can make a fire. Without fire they couldn’t warm up in the winter or cook food.

7) 193 pounds of "portable soup" - This portable soup would help make food. This paste would really help making different soups with meat they obtain on the journey.

8) 10 1/2 pounds of fishing hooks and fishing lines - Fishing rods are important because they could fish for fish for food. Without these, fishing would be harder for them.

9) Other drugs for blistering, salivation and increased kidney output - Of course they would need this to help with bad things your body will do.

10) Surveyor’s compass - This is very important if they want to find their way to and back from the Pacific. Without it they could be extremely lost.

One Important Person from the Expedition

If I were to choose a person from the corps of discovery that’s ranked as a private I’d choose Private John Potts. I’d choose this for many reasons. One, he was a miller. Two, he was part of the U.S. army.

So the first reason is because he’s a miller. With this we could have him grind up corn into meals to trade with the indians or make food. The second reason is that he was part of the army for three years before the expedition. We will need his knowledge, because we need more people that know how to use a gun.

Plant

The Prairie Apple, also known as the Pediomelum esculentum, is a root found in the prairie. It contains an edible part of it, which is the root. It has very small flower pods on it. The color of the pods are a purple color. The rest of the plant is green in color.

The leaves have a unique shape to it. The stem comes out and 5 leaves spring out in the same area. This plant could sell for some food across the globe or just for America.

Animal

The Columbian Black-Tailed Deer aka Odocoileus hemionus columbianus, is obviously a new type of deer. It’s one unique feature is the black tail. They live in the Pacific northwest. They’re also subspecies to the mule deer.

This animal could also be used as a food source. It could also be used for trading with the Natives later on in history.

The Nez Perce lived in the plains west of the Rocky Mountains. They lived in scattered villages holding up to about 4,000 men in total. They were excellent horsemen and they hunted buffalo and fished for salmon. They were vulnerable to their enemies because they had no guns from Europeans yet. When Lewis and Clark met them, they were very nice to the Corps. The Nez Perce greeted them with a feast. The Corps stayed with the tribe for several days. The Corps traded goods for horses, but they left the horses with the Nez Perce until their journey back to the east took them over the Mountains again. The Nez Perce also helped find good timber for canoes for the Corps. When the Corps finally left the Nez Perce, both groups were happy because they got what they wanted. The Corps got horses, and the Nez Perce got some guns and ammunition.

Spot #1: Spirit Mound is located near Vermillion South Dakota. It is very hot there plus it was a big mound. Spirit Mound is located in north-central America. The tribes that lived near the sight all said that they wouldn’t dare to get near because of the myth of tiny men who’d kill anyone that got near it. The only interaction of this place was the myth.

Spot #2: Beaverhead Rock is near Dillon, Montana. The rock looked like a beaver’s head, and that’s where its name came from. Beaverhead is in the Mountain region of the U.S. The SHoshone was the tribe that came up with the name. This rock helped Sacagawea guide the Corps to the Shoshone because it was familiar.
