Joel and Clementine meet at a beach. This is the birth and infancy of their relationship. From here, both exhibit behaviors alike to a postnatal child and toddler- curious, open-minded, energetic, yet still striving for independence. During and following this time, they frequently see each other, creating fun and high energy memories and learning more of each other. However, this is also the start of their toxic co-decency with each other, where the signs of their potential incompatibility is shown.

Teenage Stage to Adulthood stage

As their story progresses, we are shown more memories from the middle times of their relationship. This period is representative of many traits experienced during the teenage and adulthood stages of human development. Some traits of teen hood include cognitive development, emotional changes, and identity formation. This is shown in the story in flashback memories of Joel and Clementine discovering their individual identities as independent lovers into codependent partners. There is also a shift in the emotional dynamics, as Clementine wants to commit further into the relationship with a potential future with kids, but Joel struggles to see Clementine as the type of woman to have this future with. Despite this, they struggle to seek autonomy because they have not yet learned to form an independent identity. During this time, Joel pursues the memory erasing treatment as he recalls the memories of a self-deemed doomed relationship.

Late Adulthood to Death

In these final stages, we are shown memories of their relationship where it reached a boiling point. These stages usually include physical and cognitive declines, which is represented in the arguments as they decline in their understanding and compassion of each other. These arguments lead to an emotional numbing, and eventual death of the relationship, causing Clementine and subsequently Joel to seek the memory erasing procedure.
