Expected to be quiet and on task until the teacher was ready to move on. Could be anywhere from 5 minutes to 45 minutes. We took AR tests after each independent book we read.

In elementary we would come in and first thing in the morning we would have independent reading, while the teacher would get their things together or work with other students who needed to catch up on something. 

In middle school/high school most of that went away and was just for filling in time or when we needed to read something for that particular class.

It stands for drop everything and read. We got to go around in the room and have a snack as we read. It was probably one of my favorite times during the day.
