The Romans invaded Britain in the year 43AD, and in 122AD, Newcastle was known as Pons Aelius. When the Romans departed in 410AD the area was renamed Monkchester.

In the year 1080AD the area was named Novum Castellum (Newcastle) when a wooden castle was erected near the River Tyne to watch for incoming invaders. The stone castle, that still remains in position today was built in 1172-77AD.
