         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Participant Information -</strong></p><p><br></p><p>The Romans invaded Britain in the year 43AD<strong>, </strong>and in 122AD, Newcastle<strong> </strong>was known as Pons Aelius. When the Romans departed in 410AD the area was renamed Monkchester. </p><p><br></p><p>In the year 1080AD the area was named Novum Castellum (Newcastle) when a wooden castle was erected near the River Tyne to watch for incoming invaders. The stone castle, that still remains in position today was built in 1172-77AD.</p>]]></description>
