Santiago was very connected to Nature and knew everything there waste know about the sea. He could read the sky's and the clouds to see the weather for the day. Nature came easy to Santiago and the sea was his life. Hemingway quotes that "Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated." Santiago still had adventure in his heart and his love for the ocean poured out his eyes for you could sea that this man was a fighter. Still Santiago was old and we concluded that Santiago was ready to end his long voyage of life at sea and the fish was just his company for the rest of his ride. " He no longer dreamed of storms, nor of women , nor of great occurrences, nor of great fish, nor fights, nor contests of strength, nor of his wife. He only dreamed of places now and of the lions on the beaches. They played like young cats in the dusk and he loved them as he loved the boy." As he is preparing to stay with this fish till his death Santiago reflects on his life and what made him happy throughout his life.
