After reading through the essay multiple times, I think the essay is trying to say that Jollibee is a big part of being a Filipino since most parts of the essay revolve around this restaurant. If you asked Filipinos what Jollibee was, they would immediately know what it is, and it would bring a big smile to their face since it is a very common place for Filipinos to have a good time with their families.

There were three major events that happened in the story. The first was about the author and his journey to eat at a Jollibee in Manhattan. The second one discussed the story of the author’s family and his Filipino Culture. The last one was about the author’s feelings toward his culture and his experiences with other Filipinos. These events involved the author, and his family, more specifically, his mother, since he had a reminder for himself at the start of the essay that he would take a picture of his food from Jollibee and send it to his mother.

Upon further analysis of the essay, it can be concluded that the events were narrated in chronological order because the story had a flow, meaning the details were not jumbled in the essay, and the readers would be able to follow along with the story. At first glance, it seems to be fragmented since throughout certain parts of the essay, the author would explain a random fact, like in paragraphs 19 and 20, wherein he talked about getting spam as his meal, then right after, he talked about how spam was popular among soldiers during the second world war. However, it did not mess up the flow of the story. Throughout the essay, the author tells flashbacks about his life in the Philippines. An example of this was in paragraph 12, wherein the author described his experience with Jollibee in the Philippines back when he was just a child. He explained how he never really wanted to stay in the Philippines since he just wanted to go back to the US and play video games with his friends. Despite this, he traveled around the country, eating at a Jollibee’s occasionally. The essay was written in the First Person point of view, meaning that the author himself was the one who went through the events in the story.

The author seems as though he feels out of place with his Filipino family and community. This is evident in numerous parts of the essay. For instance, in paragraph 32, he described how he felt like he did not fit in with the other family members since his food was a more exotic and traditional Filipino cuisine, whereas his other family members were eating a more western meal which was comprised of Pepsi and fried chicken. Another example was in paragraphs 35 and 36, where he felt like a tourist when he came across a Filipino Navy, who seemed disappointed in him for not knowing his own native language. Because of this, the author felt embarrassed and ashamed of himself, considering that the Navy only stayed in Manila for four months, and yet he had more knowledge about the Philippines than the author.

Personally, I enjoyed reading this essay because it felt relatable. Reading the parts about Filipino parties, Filipino food, and how impactful the Filipino culture is in the US to the point where there’s a place called Little Manila made me feel at home since it felt like I have gone through those experiences myself. I also really like how Jollibee, although it may seem like a normal restaurant, plays a big role in the lives of many Filipinos since it is a place where people gather to eat, laugh, and have fun with their families and friends. After finishing the essay, however, I felt a sort of sadness for the author since his last few sentences stated that he felt like a tourist in his own community. From my perspective, it sounds lonely, knowing that you feel out of place even in your own home. The text that resonated with me the most was paragraph 28, which talked about the potlucks that happened within the author’s family since I went through that when I was little. Since I was more comfortable with using English instead of Filipino as my chosen language, I struggled with talking to my relatives during parties, who would often speak in fluent Tagalog, which made it difficult for me to understand what they were saying.
