White privilege in society -Long Huang

White privilege is commonly seen as the advantages that white people have to bypass some restrictions created society. In Peggy Mclntosh’s article for “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”, racial roles are not equal. A white male is portrayed to have more privileges than other racial groups due to the color of their skin and social conception. A white man is seen to be wearing an invisible bag with all the tools in it to function in society while other groups start out empty handed. Society seems to prioritize white people’s quality of life over all others. White privilege can still be seen as a mainstream today. Even today, other racial groups are pressured to adapt to fit in with the norm white people create.

An example of an recent event would be a certain Rittenhouse proclaimed not guilty with self defense using a firearm over the murder of black men. While he was proclaimed not guilty and gets away scot-free, Maddesyn George was imprisoned for the murder of her alleged rapist. While one got away with armed killing proclaimed in the name of “self-defense” an innocent black female is forced to face unfair punishment due to the murder of her rapist.

Sometimes people generalize things as “I’ve been through what you’ve experienced” or “I know how you’re feeling” but that’s not true. Everyone has their own life experiences and people need to be more aware that everyone is different and not everything can be generalized as something as simple as “I understand how you feel”. In Jane Coaston’s article “The Intersectionality Wars” a black female was denied a court case because her reasoning for it was considered absurd. In a small context of it, her employee only hires males for a mechanic position and would not hire a female for the same position. The judge did not take into consideration the struggles a black female had to go through. It was a misconception as the judge assumed that the employer was fair for hiring workers of both races but did not take into consideration that she was black and female. The whole article leaned towards the concept that people should take into consideration a multitude of factors that define a person, not just the color of their skin. An example of this would be a white female experience more prejudice than a white male who may also be working in the same field of work.

An example of this would be gender inequality in female education. Even today, some societies believe that it is more beneficial for a male to receive an education than a female. Some families still prioritize having the son go to college than the daughter, with the daughter providing her own means for getting an education.

I can work just as good and better -Long Huang

Work is work and whomever does a better job should be seen as superior. In Sojourner Truth’s “Akron Speech: Ain’t I a Woman?”, she mentions how a black slave woman is considered female but does a better job than her male counterparts. The speech focused on the concept that woman can do just as good or better than men and should not be constrained by the image of her gender.

In today’s society, there are many successful, hardworking females that do better than men. Females should be judged based on their ability and not their identity as a female when in a workplace environment. An example would be the education system as women show higher abilities than men on average in terms of academic ability.
