When consumers eat other organisms they get the energy from the organisms they ate. So when plants get their energy from the sun and then a cow eats the plant it then gets all the nutrients and energy that the plant had.

There are different ways in which organisms can change energy to food. Cellular respiration is the process of oxygen turning energy into food. It takes place in the mitochondria. It releases energy from glucose in producers. Fermentation is the process of breaking down food without using oxygen. In consumers it releases energy stored in the organisms they ate.
