They offered him a place to sleep and we willingly took it as he didn’t have previous plans. They brought him to an alleyway with blankets and makeshift beds. It was then that he realized he was playing soccer with homeless orphans. He willingly took their offer and fell asleep in the midst of dirt, pillows and insects. He tossed and turned - he saw one of the children sitting awake at the end of the hallway. He fell back asleep and a few hours later woke up again and saw a different child awake at the end of the hallway. His passion for service and overwhelming altruistic mentality towards helping others was truly inspiring. It wasn’t until my sophomore year on Key Club Board that I discovered the experiences that Mr. Koo has experienced outside the walls of GBS. His experiences while travelling changed his view on people and society as a whole. He developed a deep understanding of privilege. Through Key Club, I began examining my own views on privilege. The way I viewed service became drastically different than the average person and my outlook on life quickly changed.
