Many Americans had concerns with the effects that drinking had on people and Society. Speakesy’s, rum-runners, and bootleggers made access to alcohol easier meaning they were able to drink more frequently. This concerned Americans because they knew how poorly this would effect society as a whole. In response to this people knew they had to do something about it so they formed the temperance society. After forming these society’s they became a strong political power and voiced there concerns frequently.

The women’s Christian Temperance Union, progressive reformers, industrialists and union organizers, and the anti-saloon league were all for prohibition to be passed. Many of these groups could see that alcohol was having a huge negative effect on the working class. Many business men could see that workers were coming to work hung over and their performance was quickly getting worse. Due to these things many believed that national prohibition was the best way to fix these issues.

The civil libertarians and the brewers and distillers were against prohibition because some wanted people to be able to make their own decision and keep their independence. Others believed that if alcohol was banned it would have a huge negative effect on the economy. If alcohol was banned then people who’s jobs were to sell alcohol would get fired and many were purchasing alcohol and paying for entertainment which boosted the economy.

These three things contributed to the prohibition of alcohol because speakeasy’s were places that allows gangsters to hangout and socialize which was bad for the city’s and society. Rum- runners were people who travelled to get alcohol and bring it to the states which was an issue because people didn’t want all this alcohol around. Bootleggers were people who would smuggle alcohol and sell it allowing for easier access.

As a result of these things the 18th Amendment was created and passed. The 18th Amendment states the banning of making, selling, and moving alcohol. After this amendment was passed people wanted to make sure it was enforced. In order to try and enforce this the Volstead act formed a special unit known as the treasury department. However, in the end their attempt to stop the large scale selling of alcohol failed.

Mostly bands of street thugs would try and get things from small ethnic groups containing Italian, Jewish, polish, and Irish. As a result of organized crime mobsters arose such as Al Capone and Lucky Luciano. Mobsters would protect illegal breweries and rum- running operations from rival gangs. As well as provide security for speakeasies. They would pay of nosey cops and prohibitionists. These mobsters had to become smart and strategic to not get caught. The banning of alcohol presented these business opertunities for these mobsters.
