What scene/event was the most pivotal in the book? Why do you think this?

The arrival of Max Vandenburg to Himmel street is the most pivotal scene in the book. This event sets up many events to come and determines things that would come to the Meminger's. Max's arrival also sets up many relationships that will be made and torn apart, not from conflict within the relationship itself, but by the circumstances of Nazi Germany. For example, Max and Liesel become great friends, but, once Hans gave bread to the Jew, Max had to flee Molching because the Nazis would be coming to search 33 Himmel Street for sure. This tears the relationship between Max and Liesel. Also, Hans, having sympathy for Jews and publically showing this (with the bread), he gets assigned to serve in the German Army.

"I have hated the words, I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right." (Page 528) This quote from Liesel Meminger highlights her struggle and fascination with reading, writing and the discovery of words. In the first line she says that she hates words because they are the cause of all the bad things that have happened beginning with the fuhrer. Without them Max wouldn't have had to leave and they wouldn't be at war. She then says she loves words in the next line since they have opened up a new world for her which is filled with learning and adventure. However that last line is the most important one. Liesel says that she hopes she has made these words right. Perhaps she is merely saying that I hope I spelled and used these words correctly in a grammar sense or perhaps it is deeper than that. Perhaps she hopes that she has used the words the right way in a moral sense. But is there really a right way to write words as long as your feelings are expressed to the reader?

What themes are reflected in this book? How does the author bring these themes to light?

Some themes in the book include friendship, Good vs evil, and death. The author brings friendship to light by showing the development of feelings Liesel has towards Rudy and also for Max. For example, when Rudy dies, Liesel comforts him even though she states that she isn't great at comforting people, which shows te importance of Rudy and how she will forever be changed by his death. The idea of good people vs evil people is also an ongoing theme because if some of the inhumane events in the book and how it affected Liesel and her family, like when Molching was bombed. Death is also a relevant theme because it is a part of life and the author clearly doesn't hide the fact that it's life changing for people who love those who died.

Without the arrival of Max, the story of The Book Thief would have been very different. Liesel would not have made a great friend and would never have received the books and stories and love that Max gave her. Liesel would not have been as inclined to steal the books because she would not have had Max to read them to and share them with. Overall, there would be less compassion in the story. Max brings love and care into the story and in a way unites everybody at 33 Himmel Street. Also, Max's departure marks a turn for the worse as far as things go for Liesel, Hans, and Rosa. After Max leaves, Hans joins the military and things don't look as good. Also, there would have been no books or stories made by Max in his time in the basement.
