I interviewed a content focused teachers, a special education teacher and a parent. I decided on these three interviewees because it gives me the opportunity to understand the what it really means to be collaborative on different aspects of teaching and learning. In order for a student to learn effectively, it is important that while a lot of the responsibility relies on the teacher, it takes more than just a teacher. The teacher is one as aspect to ensure that a child grows. The parent is important because they know their child better than anyone else. The special education teacher has studied and practiced many techniques that teachers are not always aware of when it comes to students with special needs. Having a collaboration between parents, teachers and co-teachers is extremely important for students who have either learning disabilities or need emotional support. I feel that interviewing a parent, a teacher and a co-teacher is the best approach to see how the pieces of the puzzle fit together.

Collaboration, Co-teaching, Consultation Application

The special education teacher believes that effective co-teaching relies collaboration and negotiation skills. Negotiation is important because the teacher needs to be able to make room for differentiation when is comes to planning lessons. The teacher believes that in order for co-teaching to be productive both the teacher and co-teacher need to be willing to share and accommodate each others ideas. The parent felt that communication and the ability to feel comfortable speaking about their child was important. If the parent is comfortable with their students teacher then they can build a stronger relationship that will allow for their child to grow. The teacher felt that being equipped with the proper tools and time to communicate with both parents and special education teachers is key. Effective collaboration is needed for co-teaching which cannot be done without communication or consultation. While there are many differences and people involved in the process, it is important to recognize that it is all leading towards one goal, student growth. Also, it is important to realize that everyone matters and needs to be heard.

Concerns

One concern that I recognized that both the teacher and special education teacher is that there are too many ideas. Both the teacher and special education teacher have differences in their ways of remediation or presenting ideas to the students. However, they find it difficult to find time to collaborate and negotiate to actually work out a plan to implement their ideas or find ways to agree. Another concern that the parent, teacher and special education worry is the lack of communication or miscommunication. With all of the responsibilities and differences in time schedules, parents find it difficult to communicate with teachers, and teachers find it difficult to communicate with other teachers. In return, they start resorting to leaving messages, texting or email. Eventually, you find that communication starts to become common through text or emails which can lead to miscommunication. There could be a delay in when messages are received by any of the parties involved. This delay could cause confusion between the educators and parents.

Benefits

There are many benefits to collaborative practices. First, it allows each of the individuals the opportunity to be on the same page. For instance, the student is not scrambling trying to understand the many different ways of learning and trying to make everyone happy. Instead the student is given more time to focus on important concepts rather than trying to understand each of their mentors and focus on many different skills at one time. This can lead to the students ability to strengthen their weaknesses. If you have a student who has learning disabilities then together the parent, teacher and co-teacher can find ways to use a students strengths and make a goal together to build on the students problem areas. the teacher and co-teacher feel that if there is a student with an emotional disability, effective collaboration can help give the student a sense of security and stability. Also, differentiation is a great benefit to co-teaching. This gives the teachers and students the opportunity to present material in different ways that can help build on each of their students strengths.

The three interviewees had very similar ideas when it came to collaboration, co-teaching and consultation. Both the special education teacher and content teacher agree that collaboration is described as a way of working with others to achieve a goal. The parent described collaboration as a way of working together to help a child. The content focused teacher and the special education teacher defined co-teaching as two teachers planning lessons together that would allow for each students to have the opportunity to grow and learn the topic being presented. The parent sees co-teaching as teachers taking turns to share ideas and teach a topic. Consultation was described by the parent as a meeting with the teacher, student and parent, similar to a one on one. The teacher and co-teacher defined consultation as a way to make others aware of issues or concerns. Considering the results form the interview, all interviewees would agree that communication, negotiation, tools, and time are needed effective collaboration.
