In a way Singapore did need the British to help sort Singapore out; although they were controlling and did let Opium sit around for too long they still helped shape it.
One of the main leaders was Sir Thomas Stanford Bingly Raffles who made the agreement for Singapore to be under the British. He had a big vision and wanted to change it all. When he gave his vision over to William Farquhar, Opium still spread around but things changed; he managed to attract traders and tourists, giving more income to the government and he let Singapore do what Singapore does. He let Singapore celebrate their traditions; something that Raffles may have never done.

From a swamp to a town, a town to a city, a city to a lifestyle. Singapore changed drastically as it became more than just a jungle. Besides the change from a jungle to a city Singapore also became INDEPENDENT! In the year 1965 Singapore was free of the British, German and many more governments. Singapore was governed by Singapore.

It also changed under Raffle's vision and William Farquhar's governing as Singapore attracted more and more sailors, traders and tourists. The population grew and grew and grew, from 1,000 people to 5 million!

Singapore was always very diverse, different cultures, different celebrations, different prayers and even different calendars. William Farquhar let them continue doing this when he took care of Singapore and 'till this day Singapore has a variety of different cultures and religions.

Another thing that stayed the same was the trading port which Singapore had, apparently is was the 16th biggest trade port; not bad for a small country? The trade port still continues 'till this day ( see note below ).

Unfortunately, that was not the case, when William Farquhar ruled he let them do what they wanted to do. This included Opium which was very harmful to the body and a huge consequence.

Despite not stopping Opium completely, he kept the traditions going and helped grow the population of Singapore. From tourists to sailors to traders and many others.
