Whilst teaching, if you say a word that they may be unfamiliar with, give a student friendly definition and get them to say it a few times. Example: &quot;Dexterity. Vocabulary is central to language development because
without sufficient vocabulary students cannot understand others or express
their own ideas. Research indicates that vocab development is directly related to reading
comprehension, therefore an integral in the acquisition of knowledge and
learning. Students receiving explicit, engaging and purposeful vocabulary
instruction throughout their learning, have greater access to a range of
learning opportunities. Therefore vocabulary instruction must be central to all
content areas and all grades.
