Whilst teaching, if you say a word that they may be unfamiliar with, give a student friendly definition and get them to say it a few times. Example: "Dexterity. Dexterity means being good with your hands. I'll say it - dexterity. Let's say it together - "Dexterity". Now turn to the person next to you and say it. Now spend 20 seconds telling your elbow buddy what dexterity means. Go." Research indicates that vocab development is directly related to reading comprehension, therefore an integral in the acquisition of knowledge and learning. Students receiving explicit, engaging and purposeful vocabulary instruction throughout their learning, have greater access to a range of learning opportunities.
