Monica's Book Box by Jahayza Choat

Monica is a kindergartener. She was born in Mexico and moved to the United States when she was three, along with her parents and four siblings. Her parents only speak Spanish in the household. I selected texts based on their representations of Monica's culture, her growing knowledge of English, and their literary award recognitions.

Dalia's Wondrous Hair by Laura Lacámara

I added this text because it showcases a whimsical journey of a young Latinx girl and includes a translation in Spanish. The bilingual aspect of this book is what drew me in because Monica can expand her English and Spanish knowledge in the classroom or at home by using context clues, the translation, or with the help of a teacher or parent.

I selected this book because it provides an age-appropriate illustration of the Mexican Revolution. It has won multiple awards based on its representation of Latinx stories which added to its appeal. This is important for Monica to read because of its historical aspects and representation, but also because its language is advanced and can expand her reading skills.

I chose this text because it is a nonfiction story illustrated to show a young girl's immigration journey from Mexico to the United States. There are English words that Monica should be able to recognize and also Spanish words that may help guide her comprehension. The representation of a female Mexican immigrant is what initially drew me in and I think this, along with enticing illustrations, will make Monica more excited to read this book.

Monica expressed that she liked horses and often talked about horses in her videos. I felt that with "I Can Read" leveled reading about horses, Monica would be more interested in the storyline of these books which could improve her comprehension practices. She also could follow along with this series of "I Can Read" books as she progresses in her reading capabilities.

I felt that this well-loved story was an appropriate example of common rhymes and predictable repetition patterns. This is important for Monica to read because it can increase her understanding of the English language and build her confidence as a reader.

Another award winner, Mo Willems, has predictable texts that are quick and simple for readers of all levels. I chose his books based on their humor and light-hearted nature, but also so Monica can develop a deeper appreciation for books. Many times, the stories are told through simple dialogue and are not very long, so Monica can feel confident in her reading abilities through these.
