Importance of experiencing inquiry - Why do you think it is important to experience inquiry as an adult learner?

Science projects offered by some organizations are lead by them. I believe that to understand better the process of learning and design a good science inquiry activity, I, as an adult learner, should experience it by myself. I practice experiential learning and teaching, so it seems the best to start.

Personally, I am a firm believer in providing inquiry activities to students. This belief is reaffirmed by the experience of wonder I myself go through when participating in an inquiry activity. Recently I participated in an inquiry activity regarding Pythagoras theorem whereby students (and in this case, me too) come to a conscious realization about the derivation of the formula. I was so impressed and having understood the derivation of formula the whole concept made more sense. I am sure students had a more meaningful learning experience than just being delivered the formula and asked to remember it. I am also currently working a leader in my school for a CPD programme to promote the use of IBL in Maths and Science. As a starter activity I decided to present the teachers (from a Maths and Phsyics background) with the opportunity to decide whether objects where living, non-living or never alive and what criteria they were using to make this selection. They could not come to an agreement about a humanoid robot and fire and their thought process through discussion was really interesting! This activity helped them realize the potential inquiry has to result in a meaningful learning experience. Therefore, I am of the opinion that if we as teachers and adults do not experience inquiry learning then, we are less likely to believe in its power and potential and ultimately less likely to provide such activities to our students.

Confucius said: "Tell me and forget, show me and remember, involve me and I understand", we can say that the last part of this statement is the essence of inquiry-based learning. Inquiry implies involvement that leads to understanding. In addition, engaging in learning involves having skills and attitudes that allow you to seek resolutions to issues and problems as you build new knowledge.
Through the process of inquiry, individuals construct much of their understanding of the natural and human worlds. The inquiry implies a "need or want to know" premise. The inquiry does not seek so much the right answer - because it often does not exist - but rather seeks appropriate resolutions to questions and problems. For educators, the survey implies an emphasis on the development of inquiry skills and the creation of thoughtful attitudes or thinking habits that will allow individuals to continue the pursuit of knowledge throughout life.
That is why, in my perspective, Inquiry Based Learning is so important in the learning process of our students and takes into account what is defined in the Student Profile of the 21st century.

1. Choice of subject - interesting for students, connected with their life; their ideas, their desires... 2. The experimental project or design are best for investigative processes 3.Question as challenge or mystery
- clarify and formulate with the students Design with the help of questions HOW? WHO? WHAT? HOW MUCH? WHEN? WHERE? WHY? WHAT FOR? 4. Organize work:- groups, space, materials to be used, 5. Atmosphere of trust and mutual respect - code in an interesting form like acrostic 6. Define tasks and priority - multiply the points for the importance of the task by the points for urgency 7. Time and organization - learn procedure 8. Ask questions that lead to productive answers. - Students first have own questions and opinions which stimulate others to a group discussion - you can have a debate on some controversial views or based on incomplete knowledge and see how students think about the issue. This can help to formulate a good question and make students curious to find solutions.9. Ask students what they think about the answers of others then ask the whole group10. Learn boosting creativity techniques - even from business world like brainstorming; then evaluate responses 11. Design Phase - which elements must be studied and then testing factors. Students must understand that only one factor should vary at a tim12. Must have a Control experiment and repeat the experiment several times - they learn about errors and have to decide what to observe; they also learn that failure or lack of observation is also the result to be included in the report - it is also important for analysis and conclusion13. How can you compare with initial hypothesis? Do you need to refolmulate hypothesis or have another experiment? Make clear distinction between observation and analysis. Ask Ss to write their findings, all that attracted their attention and to COME BACK to initial question, not to be distracted 14. Evaluate - organize EXPO to show the findings, publish films, use social media,

Remember to provide at least 3 seconds thinking time after you have asked a question and 3 seconds thinking time after a child gives an answer.

Think—pair—share – allow individual thinking time for a question, invite discussion of the question with a partner, then open up for class discussion.

Ask follow-ups – ask students to extend or qualify what they said by asking questions that challenge their thinking, such as ’Why?’, ‘Do you agree or disagree?’, ’Can you say more?’, ’Can you give an example?’, ’Describe how you arrived at that answer’.

Withhold judgement – respond to student answers in a non-evaluative way, e.g. a positive but neutral response such as ‘Thank you’, ‘Ok’, ‘That’s interesting’, ‘A-ha’, ‘I see’.

Invite the whole group to respond – encourage a response from the whole group by saying things such as; ‘How many people agree/disagree with that point of view?’ (hands/thumbs up, down or to side). You can also ask questions such as ‘Having heard that, what questions might we ask?’

Ask for a summary – promote active listening by asking for a summary of what has been said, e.g. ‘Could you summarise Kim’s point?’, ‘Can you explain what Jane has just said?’, ‘Can you tell me the arguments so far?’

Play devil’s advocate – challenge students to give reasons for their views by presenting opposing points of view, or by asking students to be devil’s advocates, e.g., ‘Who can think of a different point of view / an argument against that?’

Invite a range of responses – model open-mindedness by inviting students to consider different viewpoints: ‘There is no single correct answer to this question.
