1. Keep routines in the classroom clear and consistent.

3. Develop a schedule with the child to keep track of homework and other
assignments since many children with AS struggle with organization.

4. Be explicit and direct when explaining your own thoughts and feelings. Many
children with AS have trouble taking the perspectives of others.

5. Talk with your other students about the fact that many or most students have
challenges and that these challenges are different for different people.

6. Work with the child on decision-making strategies. Help them reframe a situation where she/he has two choices.

7. Talk to the student on a regular basis to see what he/she feels is working or not
working.

8. Establish a safe place where the child can go to calm down if she/he becomes overstimulated.

Raising Heather

Raising my daughter "Heather" was a major impact in my life because she was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome and high functioning autism. Heather was diagnosed when she was just three years old. I was in shock. I absolutely could not believe that something like this was wrong with my child. Of course, the feelings and thoughts I had were “WHY?” and then the guilt came. What did I do to cause this? Did I mess up during my pregnancy? Did I have more problems during my delivery than I realized? Did I give this to her somehow? WHAT did I do to cause this, because I know I’m the one at fault?

After the initial shock wore off, I began to read. Anything and everything I could get my hands on that had anything to do with Aspergers. I could not get enough information. Some of it was encouraging and some was very discouraging. There is a lot of debate among professionals as to whether or not ASPERGERS should be considered a “form of autism” or a totally separate condition. Either way, ASPERGERS at this current time is considered to be on the mild spectrum of “Autism” or Pervasive Developmental Disorder and is a developmental delay that is rather in many aspects to the different forms of Autism.

How Is Asperger's Syndrome Diagnosed?

Asperger's syndrome is a type of developmental disorder that hinders a person's ability to socialize with others, WebMD explains. This usually manifests as a high level of social awkwardness and difficulty making friends, as well as difficulty making eye contact and interpreting body language or gestures. Other symptoms include unusual ritualized behavior, a very limited range of interests and strange repetitive movements. People with Asperger's syndrome are usually of normal intelligence but may show a particular talent on one area such as music or math.

There is no cure for Asperger's syndrome, but several treatments can improve a person's ability to function and lessen unwanted behaviors, says WebMD. These treatments include speech therapy, special education classes, occupational therapy and social skills therapies. While no medication treats Asperger's syndrome itself, medications such as anti-anxiety medication or antidepressants can help deal with the emotional problems that arise from this disorder.

Website: https://www.reference.com/health/asperger-s-syndrome-diagnosed-1162aab82dc984f7?aq=how+is+aspergers+diagnosed&qo=cdpArticles#
