Ron Howard was playing with the truth in more ways than one.  The restricted point of view was one sided; the use of film noir was manipulative;  the musical score was emotional; and the script selected a sanitised package of Nash's life.
In these days of fake news, politicians' spin,  and viral marketing campaigns, trusting your instinct and having faith in your judgement is more crucial and more difficult than ever.

John begins by relying purely on his brain and he is surrounded by negativity as a result. By using just your brain you tend to only think about yourself and what is best just for you. In society this is where we see war occur as well as people becoming very isolated. This happened to John and he ended up creating Charles to try and counter this problem. By using your heart you start taking interest in others. We saw John open up to Alicia and as a result John's delusions were faded out. His perception of self hinges on the outcome of this journey - whether he does or does not find his 'original idea'. And, this conundrum evokes a relation to the ever-present question of whether we can, in modern society, generate an utterly new and unprecedented thought. Is music nowadays simply a modified regurgitation of songs written in the years before? As the limit of tones and notes in music is finite, could it be that our thoughts are too? This is an interesting idea as we live in a generation that celebrates innovation and, especially in the arts, novel and fresh content. Often, it can feel as though we are simply 'copying' someone else.
Nash toils in this struggle, however, Ron Howard sheds some light to us with an almost irony. The 'original idea', which is eventually found, builds upon the knowledge and findings of past mathematicians, deeming it not entirely 'original'. However, it is portrayed as this, suggesting to us that it is not 'copying' or 'cheating' to  be inspired and influenced by others.
