An argument ensued and all but 1 of the white men were kicked off. In retaliation the men called ahead to the next town where police along with enraged civilians stopped the train. Two women got off accusing the 9 African Americans of raping them. They were arrested and treated very poorly in custody, receiving no outside contact. They did this because they were a private company and had agreed, by contract, not to sell to certain races. After taking it to court the Shelley's lost. It was then taken to Supreme Court where the ruling was changed in favor of the Shelley's. They refused to let African American people stay at the hotel. They lost to a federal court, but then appealed to the Supreme Court, which still ruled this deed as unconstitutional. They were sentenced to a year in prison or they had to leave Virginia and not come back for 25 years. Mildred was outraged and wrote a letter to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. He brought their case to the Supreme Court and they found this unconstitutional.
