How do you define curriculum? How do you think it should be developed?

I define curriculum as a program that focused on a certain subject that includes a plan for student learning. A curriculum includes other materials and resources to assist in learning. A curriculum should be developed with the end result in mind. It should also be developed by a group of professionals such as administrators and teacher. I think that collaboration would have a great result for designing a curriculum.

What do you believe about the purpose of school?

I believe that the purpose of school is to educate all children so that they can have the knowledge and the skill that they need to be successful in life. I believe that school also serves other purposes aside from teaching students how to be "book smart". School should also teach children how to handle social interactions. I also see school as a place where children can feel safe and be comfortable expressing themselves.

Who should decide what students need to learn?

The school administration, teachers, and parents should all have a say in what students need to learn. Of course certain people have the role of making certain decisions such as curriculum, but all of those people should be able to have a way to voice their opinion on what the students need to learn. Administrators, teachers, and parents all know the students in different ways so they all have a different knowledge of what is important for the students to learn.

Should there be different curriculums for different students?

Yes, there should be different curriculums for different students. All students are different and they do not learn the same way. We cannot expect all these different types of learners to have the same outcome if they are all using the same curriculum.

As a classroom teacher, my current role regarding curriculum is to properly implement the curriculum to my students. My role also includes modifying the curriculum to meet each students needs if necessary. I am also required to attend professional learning community meetings and give my input on what is or is not working with curriculum in my classroom.

How does your program align with your curriculum philosophy?

The program at my current school aligns with my philosophy in some ways because of the multiple supports and modifications for different learners that are given to us by the curriculum. The programs sometimes do not align with my philosophy because a lot of the students that I teach are extremely low. Even with the modifications, the curriculum is still not working for them and that needs to change.
