The Civil Rights Movement

https://youtu.be/URxwe6LPvkM

The Civil Rights Movement took place mainly in the 1950s and 1960s. It has its roots in the century- long struggle of enslaved African Americans and their descendants to resist racial oppression and abolish the institution of slavery. African Americans had had enough of prejudice and violence against them. That’s why they mobilized and began an unprecendent fight for equality. Their goal was to equalize rights under the law in the United States.

To fight for their goal they used boycotts, sit-ins and protest marches. An example here is the bus boycott of Rosa Parks where she refused to give her seat to a white man. Most of the

activists were people of color but the movement was made up of different people and groups and people from different races and religions joined the protests. They received support from religious groups and political support from Labor unions, and also some politicians like John Lewis. He was a politician and also a leader of the movement. He helped plan the March on Washington, where people fought together against segregation and it was also the place where Martin Luther King , an important leader as well, gave his speech "I have a Dream“. This speech is an important event in the history of the Civil Rights Movement. But they obviously didn‘t just get support, there were many consequences they had to face. They got attacked by white people and police, had to go to jail or even got killed. There is no specific number of those who lost their life but it also includes children and teenagers. Even though they got treated awfully the activists never fought back.

The movement in general is still considered a rather non-violent, social movement. It ended successfully in laws to protect every American‘s constitutional rights, regardless of color, race, sex or national origin. African Americans finally had easy access to restaurants, barriers in workplace were dismantled and they also had equal access to education. The Civil Rights Movement changed the attitudes about the way black people were treated.
