A new manager, a load of new players. What's going to happen? One of the most amazing City matches for years that's what!
We actually went 0-1 down early on and feared the worst, but stormed back to lead at half time. The goals for Guildford just continued to rain on Chessington though and going into the last few minutes we were 9-1 up. Somehow we let them come back with 2 goals in the last couple of minutes to finish 9-3 winners. Guildford City. Bloody hell!

As all Guildford schoolboys and girls are taught, Guildford City FC lost their home ground at Joseph's Road in 1974 and that was the end of Southern league football in Guildford - that is until 2012. Second time lucky, our 2nd successive CCL championship and a load of (very expensive) work on Spectrum (a different story) allowed us to take our place back in the dear old SL. This was our first match. a red hot, sunny, blue skied day at Aylesbury. it was bloody hot I can tell you but Kev Rayner's City boys made it extra hot for Aylesbury with a deserved 2-1 win. Them was the days!

The athletics club had us chucked out of Spectrum at the end of Aptil so we had to play our last home game at Woking FC (thanks Woking) versus Badshot Lea. The big old 🤬 cat is goalie Antony Hall who "borrowed" the Woking FC mascot outfit before the match. You've gotta be mad to be a goalkeeper, right? We won 3-0, if we'd looked more closely we'd have seen we had a potential title challenging side for next season!

My first match

This is a bit of a cheat but it might still count so I'll tell anyway. When I moved to Guildford in 1987 my landlord was an old Guildford City fan from "the good old days" and would often go on about Josephs Road (best pitch in the southern league, blah blah blah). I even looked Josephs road up in the A-Z map book and took a walk down there one afternoon and was disappointed to find nowt but houses. Around about the same time a drinking pal started to play for a team called Guildford City (i.e. the City Club) and invited me down to watch him play. It was the Surrey & Hants Border League (Sunday football), played at the Rec on Recreation Road. Can't remember the opposition or the score surprisingly enough!

First match watching the current club? 2004, Godalming Town 2 AFC Guildford 1 (1-0 up as well, dammit) in the clubs first season at step 5. First home match? Possibly Sandhurst Town in one of the clubs first home games at Spectrum that season after being forced to play home matches at Cranleigh because of the poor state of Spectrum, but can't even remember the score, maybe 2-2. The first home match I remember, definitely AFC Guildford 3 Godalming Town 2 (Dan May last minute winner!!!). The Surrey Ad ran a photo of the Godalming manager's face on the final whistle, we should have ordered a copy of that and hung it up, it was that good.

The following season I volunteered to run the club's website. The season after that, the match programme....and the rest is history.

After a dismal 2006/07 season where we could have been relegated to Div 1 were it not for a reprieve, we started 2007/08 under a joint management team of Scott Steele and Lloyd Wye. The first match was away to Egham where we had lost 0-6 the previous season (I think). The team sill had a few old hands in it, but several new signings turned a poor team into a very good team overnight. We won 5-0 at Egham and here is my shot of a young Rob Parrott scoring #3.

The FA will release updated guidelines today following yesterday's clarification from the DCMS for spectators to be allowed at fixtures from Step 3 down. Will focus on a phased and limited return. In addition, Regional National League System Feeder League clubs are now permitted to accommodate socially-distanced spectators in line with The FA's guidelines for grassroots football. Looks like we now have the go-ahead for Step 5 clubs to start allowing fans back into the ground from this coming Saturday. The attendance has to be capped at 15% capacity (150 if the ground has a capacity of 1000). Not a problem for us, sadly.

For extra clarity:

Step 3-6 clubs can host higher level sides in pre-season WITH fans.

Step 3-6 clubs must HOST at least 1 game at 15% capacity before hosting 30% capacity games after 30 Aug.

Came across an old programme from 2003 and thought I would share with you the league table for April 20 2003. Its from the Surrey County Senior League. Guildford would finish mid table this season but still got accepted into the new Combined Counties division one. The club would go on to win the championship in their first season.

The football club feels to me a little like the summer of 2007. Having ended a really terrible 2006/07 we had new blood in the shape of joint managers Steele and Wye and a complete rebuild of the team. We went on to have the best season to date at step 5 eventually finishing as league runners-up. Steele/Wye's first league game in charge was a 5-0 win at Egham Town. A few months earlier we'd lost 0-6 at the same ground.

I've been pleased to see the clubs home attendances holding steady around the 150 mark this season. This got me thinking about the hard slog the club have faced getting the town to notice the football club. I went looking for any photos I had taken when I started coming down to Spectrum. Couldn't find any from 2004 but I did find these from 2005 (two are marked as v Andover in the FA Vase and others against Colliers Wood United. Attendances at this time were regularly around 20-30 as I recall. A one-sided Spectrum and the "bus shelter" for cover and no clubroom for supporters drinks. The manager, his assistant and the entire team walked away from the club that summer. We were then forcibly moved sideways into the Southern League South-West division, struggled to find a manager and had a truly disastrous season. We have never recovered more than 10 years later.

As we approach our first game of the season, and first ever in the Southern Combination League division 1 since our relegation in April - I thought I would share the folder from our first game of the 2007/08 season. Confidence was at a low after a poor 2006/07 season and we were not expecting anything other than defeat. However a new management team and many new players saw us thump Egham on their own patch 5-0. GCFC was very saddened to hear the news that ex Guildford City player Terry Dyson has died aged 91.

Terry played for Guildford City in the early 1970s and was part of the team that won the Southern League Division One in 1971.

Terry also played for Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham and Colchester United and was part of Spurs double winning side in 1961.

There was a minute's silence for Terry before the Guildford City v Westfield (Sussex) game on 22 August 2026.
