In Mexico people of all ages throw and break cascarones, (confetti filled eggshells) over each others heads. This craft originated in China. By cracking them over each others head brings a shower of good luck and good fortune along with the spill of confetti. We also make a wish before attempting to crack an egg on your friend’s head. If the egg breaks right away on your first try, your wish will be granted. Because they are eggs they symbolize rebirth and Jesus’ resurrection. Cascarones also represent the empty tomb, when you break the shell to fill it up with confetti you take out the actual egg out.

Also In some parts of Spain and Latin America, on Ash Wednesday, an unusual ceremony called El Entierro de la Sardina (literally, the burial of the sardine) takes place. A large number of people get together to observe a centuries old annual tradition of burying a dead fish (or the likeness of one). This ceremony is based on the belief of burying, symbolically, our past in the hopes of creating a better and more fruitful future. The first image of this “burial” was painted by Spanish painter Francisco de Goya in an oil painting called, “El Entierro de la Sardina”, dated between 1812 and 1819.
