In line with the long-standing nature vs. nurture debate in psychology, this documentary illustrated how nature and nurture intertwine and intersect with one another. 

The triplets share identical genes, which are reflected in their similar physical appearances, personality traits, and preferences, highlighting the role of nature. I was astonished to discover that they spoke in similar ways, had shared interests in women, and even favored the same brand of cigarettes. However, as the documentary unfolded, it became apparent that the environment in which they were raised, including their socio-economic status and upbringing by their parents, also played a significant role in shaping these characteristics, emphasizing the intersection of nature and nurture.

When it comes to the “nature” aspect, the triplets were raised in different socio-economic backgrounds and cultural environments, which influenced their values, beliefs, and behaviors. David was raised in an upper-class family, Bobby was raised in a working-class family, and Eddy was raised in a middle class family. Their upbringing exposed the influence of the environment on their mental health and well-being. Despite being separated, the triplets experienced similar psychological trauma as a result of their separation, and their distinct upbringings had varying effects on their mental health outcomes as they matured.

The triplets' story took a dark turn once the truth was unveiled - their lives were part of a longstanding human experiment aimed at unraveling the mysteries of nature vs. nurture. I was taken aback by this truth and realized how unethical and terrible it was to utilize humans as test subjects. What shocked me even more was discovering that the triplets were not the only ones involved in the study; dozens of twin pairs were also used for experimentation. 

These pairs' separation from their blood relatives and the undisclosed reasons for years of psychological testing also contributed to the nurture they experienced. These experiences, combined with other factors, influenced their ability to cope with life's challenges.

Regrettably, one of the triplets (Eddy) took his own life at only age 33 after a long battle with manic depression.

The quest to measure nature vs. nurture has permanently affected the lives of these unfortunate test subjects, and it is even more disturbing to learn that the study's findings won’t be fully published until 2066, and no conclusions were ever drawn.
