ASD is usually diagnosed by observing a child's behavior. Paying attention to what the child is doing too much of, and not enough of. There are 3 commonly used diagnostic tools for autism. The Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale (ADOS), Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS-2), and the American Psychiatric Associations's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Although some students with autism may attend additional special programs or therapy, most students with ASD attend public school where a free option of special education is provided.
