FACS - one strategy I have that works well is keeping an agenda on the board every day. Students know what to expect and we are more likely to get through it all if it's written up there.

Bell ringers! It gets the students focused and engaged so they know daily that it's the first thing that have to do. It also gives me time to do attendance, quick-check homework, etc...We almost always review answers to the questions and I take up the bell work sheet every other week.

Model the behavior you expect from your kids. If you want them to do things on time, grade their work on time. If you want them to be prepared, be prepared. Kids respect a teacher who does his/her homework. I hear stories all the time about the fact that I'm the only teacher who gets their papers back on time and I'm wondering why. What does it say to a kid when you put them on the back burner... but expect them to put you in the front?

Something that may help the absent work thing... make yourself a seating chart and cover it with a transparency. I take attendance and homework checks on the transparency and then transfer it to a real gradebook (actually, I made it in Excel) later, when there's time to do it. Keeping it in the computer is not as convenient.

Healthful Living--I agree starting with bellringers is great, it allows the students to get focused and you time to get attendance. Another thing that helps is an absent folder. This has cut down drastically the age old questions "I was absent did I miss anything?" They know to go to the folder and grab any handouts and they can look on our notebook checklist for any hand written notes they may have to copy from a peer.

Then for missing work I always place a missing indicator in PowerSchool Gradebook and then I can just run a missing assignment report.
