Dealing with bullies isn't always easy. Most of the time teachers and parents can punish students left and right and yet they still find a way to get through to the victims. Finding ways to successfully put a stop to their schemes is what we all need to be trying to do.

The first step to stopping this problem is to encourage the victims to stand up and tell someone what is going on. With the correct disciplinary system in place, then students will less likely be afraid to speak out because they know that the bullying won't just be pushed aside but will be attempted to halt, most commonly with great efforts.

Professor of Human Development at Finders University, Phillip Slee, sates, "An important element of many anti-bullying programs is encouraging victims to tell someone. Our research shows that this is the number one coping strategy reported by trainee teachers as the tactic they would most recommend to students."

"In our Australian study involving adolescents we asked them to tell us how effective various coping strategies were for dealing with bullying. At the same time we asked “experts” (teachers, counselors and researchers) from around the world to tell us what they thought were the most effective strategies...They rated strategies such as talking to family members or professionals outside school, talking to teachers and counselors at school and using the school’s anti-bullying and harassment policies and procedures as the most effective."

He states that, "Cyber bullying takes things to a new level - given its 24/7 nature...not to mention the power that written and visual electronic media can have." He went on to list 8 plot points on how to handle bullying.

"Education about the harmful effects of bullying is vital."
When students are informed on what to do when they see either someone being bullied, know one of their friends being bullied, or are possibly being bullied themselves, rules and steps to follow that will help the situation and will not put the victim into anymore harm are important to know. Many schools should be sharing this information with their student body.

"Young people themselves should be involved in developing and promoting coping strategies."
Teachers and parents don't always have to be the ones to handle the problem. Referring to the previous point, if schools taught others how to handle these types of situations, that could benefit both the students and staff when approaching the problem. It could teach students the coping and social skills they'll need in the real world. For example, if they needed to approach their boss, a coworker, or maybe even their own employee, it is important to know how to carefully and patiently handle the problem.

"The strategies should be adapted to the age, background and culture of the young people."
Most students won't want to sit down and listen to some boring 3 hour lecture over how to confidently approach a teacher or the bully them self. One high school went through the effort of having their theatre program put on a play that showcased what happens when someone step s up to the plate to take care of bullying and what happens when no one does. If schools put forth effort to try and connect with their age group, then maybe people would be more likely to pay attention

"Parents should be communicated with about the likely signs of their child being bullied."
Some parents don't care what their students do, and those that do will believe every lie that their student tells because every parents thinks that their child is perfect and would never do anything to harm another student. For those that are parents of the bullied, they never really notice that anything is wrong. Unless the victim is willing to go forward with telling their parent or guardian, they will continue to live their life as if nothing is wrong, continuing to bottle up their emotions until they explode and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

"Schools and parents should work closely in partnership to support those being bullied."
Many times when a parent finds out that their students is being bullied, their first instinct is to contact the school board and complain about how they're doing nothing to solve the problem and how their student continues to get hurt daily. If parents and teachers came together to solve the problem, then there would be less bickering and more assents.

"Strategies such as telling a trusted adult, using the school peer-support system and counselling should be advertised and encouraged."
Many students don't know what to do when they're being bullied or know of someone else who is. If schools put more effort into exhibiting groups or activities or time with the school counselors, then maybe there'd be a lower percentage of bullying in that school because people will finally decide to do something about it based on what they are taught.

You do not always have to turn to simple pleasures such as drugs, alcohol, sexual relations, etc. just to try and escape the problem.
