As a professional school counselor in a Title 1 school, it is essential to know how to serve Foster Care Students. Serving pre-kindergarten through third grade, many foster care students come through the system, often not staying an incredible amount of time. It is essential for faculty, staff, and administrators to know the legal and ethical rights to ensure the equity of foster care students. Foster care students do not have any control over their situation, where and when they have to relocate, making life difficult on its own. Students in foster care frequently experience difficulties that influence their personal, social, and academic success.

School Counselors have the opportunity to utilize their distinctive position within the school community to effectively serve and address the complex needs of students in foster care. Challenges that many foster care students face may include trauma, abuse, neglect, and loss, all of which influence a student's ability at school. Foster care students often lack the same opportunities as their peers. It is essential to advocate for students in foster care to ensure equity and access in all areas.

The number of foster students is on the rise in public schools. School is not just a place for children to receive an education. Children develop valuable social and behavioral skills, gain friends, participate in non-academic activities and events, and perhaps most importantly, have a structure and a sense of purpose, which a foster child may lack in other areas of their life. If all faculty and staff ensure equity for foster students in school, that could be life-changing for that student. Many resources, laws, and amendments are in place to protect foster care students and make it possible for them to succeed in school and beyond. Educators can make a difference for foster care students.
