Ifixit Bosch rotary hammer device page

Here, I created a device page for a tool called a "rotary hammer" designed by Bosch for the website called Ifixit. Its function is to allow for users who have a broken or damaged tool to be able to quickly and easily determine what is wrong with their equipment, and how to repair it. Our goal as designers for these pages was to find this information across the web, and collect it all to put into an easily accessible location. In turn, this required us as designers to learn about search engine optimization, and the techniques to maximize the findability of our page, as it was important for us to both be able to find this information ourselves, as well as make sure that people looking for this information would be able to easily find our guides through the search engine as well.

Hello! Here, you will learn about the projects and lessons that I learned whilst working through the WRIT2201S course for york university. I'm a university student and the aforementioned university, and am currently majoring in information technology. As such, it was imperative that I learned these key skills and projects that I will discuss through the contents of this portfolio. I hope you enjoy!

The hardest factor of all during the creation of this device page was of course actually gathering the data. By nature of what we were doing, there of course wasn't much information that was regularly available. The entire reason we were making these device pages was because the information required hadn't already been sorted out and easy to find. As such we had to the SEO techniques we learned in class to help us, such as through the usage of important keywords, or through minimizing the unimportant information within the search in order to find this data. In my particular case, I checked dozens of sites including one under a russian domain, utilizing these techniques, all in order to collect the information I needed for this device page

The most important takeaways from this project was definitely in how to best utilize SEO techniques. Before this project, while I had already had a pretty good grasp on how to find data i'm looking for on the user-end of the search engine, I had virtually no experience with developing and creating a project that was optimized to be identified through the search engine

In this project, I was tasked with designing and creating from scratch, a step by step guide in order to fix a broken item that was inside of my home. In turn, I decided to choose how to repair a Gunpla model kit, which is basically a plastic figure made out of hundreds of individual parts that need to be assembled out of the box.

Unlike the first project with the device page, here we were actually tasked with creating the information ourselves. As such the first step was to of course, figure out what information already existed on our topics in order to figure out how best to display our information to the readers. For me, I did research primarily on youtube, seeing the video guides that were available on the topic, and proceeded to use said guides as a baseline for how best to depict the information I was trying to get across. After this, it was a simple matter of actually doing the repair in person, and photographing each step along the way.

It was through this project that I had to learn about how to best display information to the users. In my initial drafts I often forgot that the average user wouldn't know complex terminology such as what a "runner" is, or specifically how much cement glue they would need to coat onto the piece. It was only through our repeated reviews and assessments that I learned how best to deal with creating content intended to be provided to the users.

Overall, across the span of this course I learned about so many important things. From search engine optimization to looking at project design from a user centric outlook, the skills I learned though this course will be incredibly valuable when developing projects in the IT field in the future. Through experiencing the challenges of designing a user friendly guide and easily searchable webpages, I was able to better understand the mindset required when developing applications or projects, and in turn this class served as an excellent learning experience for improving myself in those aforementioned areas. Above all though, the most important thing I learned was simply that there is so much more that goes into user friendly design than I first thought.
