My BIioArea ( Crete) is part of a biodersity hotspot, the Mediterranean Basin. The flora of the Mediterranean Basin is dramatic. Its 22,500 endemic vascular plant species are more than four times the number found in all the rest of Europe. The hotspot also supports many endemic reptile species. Although Crete is relatively small ecoregion, its' floral and faunal diversity is high. There have been found endemic mammals like the Cretan White-toothed Shrew (Crocidura zimmermanni), the Cretan Spiny Mouse (Acomys minous), the Cretan Wildcat (Felis silvestris cretensis) and the Cretan Ibex / Agrimi /Kri Kri (Capra aegagrus creticus), as well as reptiles, amphibians the Cretan Wall Lizard (Podarcis cretensis) and the Cretan Water Frog (Pelophylax cretensis) and butterflies the Cretan Argus (Plebejus psyloritus), the Cretan Small Heath (Coenonympha thyrsis) and the
Cretan Festoon ((Zerynthia cerisyi cretica). As far as flora approximately 10% of Crete's flora is endemic. That is, they can only be found in Crete. And since Crete with more than 1.700 different plant species is one of the most species-rich areas in Europe, there are also a lot of endemic plants. As Crete is vacation destination, populations of threatened species are increasingly fragmented and isolated to make way for resort development and infrastructure. Moreover timber harvesting and the conversion of forest into pastures have altered much of the original landscape of the island
