**to make it harder, do not let participants get in groups with the same people every time**

Pass out index cards and markers to each participant. Explain they are to write down something interesting about themselves – something they have done or someplace they have been. Take the cards back up and then shuffle and redistribute them. Go around the room and have each person guess whose card they are holding.

o   Three balloons per person

o   2 bags of flour

o   Scissors

o   Small Funnel

o   Plastic Knives

 

Instructions

o   Take the first balloon and stretch it out

o   Using the funnel, fill the balloon with flour, about big enough to fit comfortably in your fist. If the flour isn’t flowing in, use the knife to push the flour down into the balloon

o   Tie off the first balloon to seal the flour inside

o   Take a second balloon and cut off the excess rubber around the opening

o   Put the first balloon inside of the second, with the tied off tab facing the back of the second balloon

o   Repeat the process with the third balloon to make the stress ball more sturdy

o   Squeeze it and make sure it works!

o   Wrapping Paper

Instructions

o   The group will need to wrap a gift-box by working together

o   Each person will have a “disability”

o   Blindfolded

o   Can’t speak

o   Can’t use their thumbs (thumbs are taped)

o   Use only one hand

o   Only use your elbows

o   Only use your non-dominant hand

o   They can take as much time as they need

o   Once they finish, ask them if they are happy with the job they’ve done. If not, have them do it again

 

Works as an icebreaker because it puts everyone at a disadvantage and forces them to work together. They can learn to trust their team and rely on them when they need help throughout the week.

 

Possible questions to ask:

o   How did you feel at different points in the activity? 

o   Was there a time you felt frustrated? 

o   How did you work together as a team to complete the task? 

o   How does this activity help you understand how to work with others more effectively?

 

Steps:

-       Set up teams with 2-4 players on each team 

-       One person on each team will be the mummy and each team will be given 2 rolls of toilet paper. 

-       They will have 5 minutes to complete the game.  

-       The team players are to circle around the mummy and pass the toilet paper to each other while wrapping the mummy in it.  

-       The leader of the group will be the judge and decide which team has created the best mummy design. 

Steps:  

-       Two people meet and do R/P/S 3x 

-       The best out of 3 evolves into the next animal, the loser stays the same. 

-       When you lose you devolve 1 level but you can never devolve past an egg. 

-       Once you evolve into a supreme being you form a chorus line and every time a new person becomes a supreme, you sing stop in the name of love

Egg>chicken>farmer>jedi>supreme being  

-       Gather the group in a circle. 

-       Two people are in the center. 

o      One person is a farmer & another person is a donkey 

-       The farmer asks a person in the circle, “will you adopt my donkey?” 

-       The person answers, “Depends (or I don’t know), what does your donkey do?” 

-       The farmer comes up with something that the donkey does; then, the donkey does whatever the farmer came up with. 

o      For example, “My donkey does the dance move known as the worm”; Or, “My donkey sings opera” 

-       Then, the person responds with “Sure, I’ll adopt your donkey.” 

o      The donkey gets to leave the center & join the circle. 

o      Original farmer then becomes the next donkey.  

o      The adopter becomes the farmer of the new donkey.  

o      The cycle CONTINUES.

Steps:   

-       Split up into 2 teams. 

-       One member of each team volunteers to be blindfolded 

-       The blindfolded volunteers should find the fake snowball & throw it at the other teams’ blindfolded member by listening to the instructions of teammates 

-       Can alter the game with funny rules like can only use animal sounds and give the team 2 or 3 minutes to strategize OR must use a different language, etc.

-       Pair Up (Ideally, pair with someone who you do not know) 

-       Introduce yourselves 

-       Create a fun handshake together  

o      Can give a time estimate

-       Once each pair has created a handshake, each pair will share their handshake with the large group.  

-       Anytime you shout “handshake buddy”, the pairs must find each other as quick as possible and do their handshake 

Note: Alteration can be to designate a handshake “milking buddies”; milker must make milk sounds, and cow must ‘moooo’ 

-       Materials: game leader, pen & paper 
 

Steps:  

-       Form a circle.

-       Each person thinks of a name and writes it on a strip of paper. They will be this person.   

-       Once you have written down your name, fold up the paper and place in the center of the circle. 

-       For each game, one person is the game leader: they will not play.   

-       The game leader writes down all the names & adds three extra “wildcards” 

-       START: 

   o      The game leader reads out 
            the list of names three 
            times, including the  
            wildcards  

   o      A player is chosen or 
           volunteers to start. They pick 
           any person (not the game 
           leader) and try to match a  
           name from the list to that  
           player.  

          §  For example, “Daniel, are 
              you Beyoncé?”  

 

 o      They let you know if you are 
          right or wrong. 

         §  If you are right, you “team  
         up” with that person and start  
         working as a little team  
        (empire). You can/should 
        share your famous name when 
        you join a team.   

o      Whether the guess was right or wrong, the next turn belongs to the person who was asked.  

       §  So, in this example, it’s 
       Daniel’s turn.   

o      You keep going, with the teams getting larger and larger, until you have a winner (the last person left)   

 

-       Extra Rules 

o      You can’t bluff by asking someone if they are the famous person you selected for yourself 

o      Once the game leader has read out the list three times, they cannot read the list out again 

o      Don’t forget the leader does not play. Nominate a new game leader for each game. 

 

Steps:  

-       Everyone gets in a circle, shoulder-to-shoulder, with their hands in the middle. On the count of three, they jump back into a "Ninja" pose.  

-       One-by-one and continuing counter-clockwise, each person takes a turn being the attacker and tries to touch another person's hand in a single "Ninja" move.   

o      The attacked, to avoid being touched, reacts with a single Ninja move. Only the attacker and attacked may move; all others remain frozen.  

o      Whether missing, successfully hitting or avoiding, only a single Ninja move is permitted and both must stay frozen in that pose. 

-       If a person's hand is touched, they must leave the circle.  

-       The player to the right automatically goes next and may choose to attack any other player.  

-       The person who is aimed for doesn't go next; the next person is always to the right of the person who just went.  

-       The game ends when only one person remains. Whether missing, successfully hitting or avoiding, only one Ninja move is permitted and one must stay in that pose.  

-       The person to the right of the person who started the previous round starts the next round. 

-       Ask for a volunteer; volunteer is the bear 

-       The rest of the group are towns people 

-       Area is designated as the town 

o      Group creates a town name

-       Bear leaves the town area 

-       Facilitator/leader narrates: “Beautiful day in ____ town. The towns people are walking about and enjoying conversation, when suddenly a bear heads for the town” 

-       When the townspeople hear that the bear is headed for town, all the townspeople should choose a position to freeze in. 

-       The bear enters the town and tries to get a towns person to laugh (clarify the boundaries in accordance with the group dynamics) 

-       The first towns person to laugh becomes the bear for the next round.  

o      Also, if someone laughs, the narrator can announce a towns person fell victim to a bear attack (artistic choice).  

-       If no one laughs, announce that the townspeople survived the bear’s visit.  

-       Then, ask for a volunteer to be the next bear. 

Prep: 

-       Multiple flashlights 

-       Brief the group to be safe (no throwing things, cautious in the dark, etc.) 

 

Steps: 

-       Turn off the lights. 

-       Vampire has a flashlight. 

-       If the vampire finds you & tags you with the flashlight, you become a vampire and must help find the hiders.

1)    Select a Moderator: This should be someone who knows the rules & has played the game before it was possible 

 

2)   Choose Players: The Moderator divides the deck of cards as follow:

o     A king—the Detective 

o   A queen—the Doctor 

o   Cards of one suit (such as hearts) for Mafia members—one for every three Innocents 

o   Miscellaneous cards (no hearts) for the Innocents 

o   The Moderator may either assign additional roles or have players draw cards designated as being for a particular part, i.e. Jack of Spades for the Magician 

 

3)   Shuffle & Deal the Cards  

-       The Moderator shuffles the cards and then deals them out so that each person has a card. Players are not to show their cards to anyone else.  

 

Steps:   

1)    Time to Sleep   

-       The Moderator begins the night cycle by having all players close their eyes & put down their heads. After everyone is “asleep,” the Moderator instructs the Mafia to wake up & choose a victim. Now, the Mafia members will be able to see all their fellow members. They pick a victim by gesturing silently. Players may gently tap their fingers to disguise any noise made. They tell the moderator their decision by pointing to him or her. Then the Mafia “sleeps” again until “morning.”  

 

2)   Awaken the Detective  

-       While everyone else is still asleep, the Moderator wakes up the Detective, who points to someone they suspect is a member of the Mafia. If the Detective is correct, that Mafia member is eliminated from the game. If not, the Detective now knows the identity of an innocent. The Detective then goes back to “sleep”.    

 

3)   Awaken the Doctor  

-       Next, the Moderator wakes up the Doctor who will choose a person to save by silent pointing. The Doctor can choose to save himself and thus survive the night. If the Doctor chooses another player and that individual is chosen by the Mafia to be killed, nothing will happen to the victim – they are “saved.” If the Doctor is chosen for death by the Mafia, he is out of the game and the townspeople can no longer be saved.  

 

The Day Cycle 

4)   Time to Awaken   

-       The Moderator tells the players to open their eyes and then announces who “died” the previous night.

5)   H0ld Discussions   

-       The players discuss recent events. Players do not show their cards, but try to convince others they have a certain role. If the discussion reaches a point where a player has a suspicion, the game moves on to the accusation.

6)   Make an Accusation 

-       Whoever has a suspicion may accuse another player of being a member of the Mafia. This accusation must be seconded by another player. Additionally, the accuser must explain the reason behind the accusation. Other players may then tell if they believe the accusation is just. 

7)   Defend the Accused 

-       Any player who feels the accusation is unjust may choose to defend the accused. If desired, this can be done as a trial, with the accused presenting a fictional alibi and even accusing other players. In some versions of the game, the defense if conducted by a player designated as the Lawyer.

8)   The Vote    

-       The Moderator calls for a vote and players indicate whether they believe the accused is guilty or not. It may be required that the vote be anonymous or not.

9)   The Verdict  

-       If it is not decided that the accused is not guilty, accusations begin again. Again, there is a defense and vote. This continues until a player is declared guilty and leaves the game. If the majority voted the initial accused player guilty, the night round begins again.

-       Requires at least 3 people, but more people make for more fun  

 

Steps:  

-       With their eyes closed, seekers congregate and count to a predetermined number while one player hides.  

-       When the group finishes counting, the search is on! 

-       The seekers spread out to find the hiding player  

-       As the seekers find the player hiding, they join him in the hiding place until all the seekers have found the hiding place (packed like sardines, get it!?).  

-        The last player to join the group becomes the next person to hide.

Steps: 

-       Choose a word pattern  

o      Examples: 

§   Bill loves ink but hates tattoos; Bill loves fruit but hates apples. The pattern is double consonants.  

§  Jessica loves spoons but hates forks; Jessica hates water but loves pools. The pattern is double vowels.

-       Group must guess what pattern you used  

-       If a participant gets the pattern, they should not shout the answer but follow the pattern. 

-       You can play until everyone gets the pattern or until others give up.  

-       Blindfolds (One per participant)   

-       Rope/Yarn 

Steps:  

-       Form a circle 

-       Pass the yarn around the circle 

-       Once each person has a piece of yarn, cut the yarn & tie the ends 

-       Put a blindfold on each participant 

-       Once the blindfolds are on, ask the group to try and form a shape.  

-        Everybody must touch the object with some part of their body (appropriately) and no one may use the same body part.  

-       Make up a story as to why they must touch the can. Can begin whenever after planning, but once a body part touches the can it sticks there. 

-       Form group into 2 standing lines.  

-       Everyone faces forward.  

-       The two people at the back of the line decide on what to act out (example: kangaroo, playing soccer, while eating ice-cream)

-       After deciding on what to act out, the two people tap the people on the shoulder in front of them and act out the charade.  

-       Those people must pass the charade up the line without using noise or talking till it gets to the front of the line.  

-       The line that gets closest to the original combination of actions wins & gets a point.  

-       After guessing & a winner is chosen, the players from the front of the line rotate to the back of the line & create the next charade. 

-       Decide on how many groups you will break the group into 

-       Acquire two bananas per group (in case they want to do a 2^nd round)   

 

Steps: 

-       Split up group into multiple teams 

-       Each team lines up in a row, facing the same direction and lay down on the ground

-       Put the banana between the feet of the person at the front of each line   

-       Count down from 3; then, try to pass the banana down the row with your feet

-       Two random (safe) items/objects  

Steps: 

-       Identify one object as the “thing-a-ma-jig” & the other object as the “whatcha-ma-call-it”  

-       Pass the “thing-a-ma-jig” one direction (in this case to the right) & the “whatcha-ma-call-it” the other direction (in this case to the left) 

o      Player 1 say to the person on their right (player #2), “do you want a ‘thing-a-ma-jig” 

o      Player 2 asks, “A what?” 

o      Then, the player 1 reminds player 2 by saying “a thing-a-ma-jig” 

o      Once reminded, player 2 accepts the “thing-a-ma-jig”  

o      Player 2 asks says to the person on their right (player #3), “do you want a ‘thing-a-ma-jig”

o      Player 3 asks player 2, “A what?” 

o      Player 2 has forgotten, so they should ask player 1 again. 

o      Once player 1 reminds player 2, player 2 tells player 3 “it’s a thing-a-ma-jig” 

o      Player 3 accepts the “thing-a-ma-jig” 

o      This process continues for both objects in opposite directions until each object reaches the last person on the side opposite from the starting point.

-       Acquire a whoopee cushion   

Description/Steps: 

-       Use a whoopee cushion in the form of a red light/green light game.

-       Objective is for the “it” person to catch people on the way to get the whoopee cushion which is behind their feet.  

-       The group must capture the whoopee cushion without getting tagged out for moving; then, the group must return it back to the starting line without the ‘it” person being able to see the whoopee or know who is carrying it.  

-       On their retreat back red light/green light rules are still in effect. 

-       The “it” person may make one guess at each red light to see if they can find the person who has the whoopee. 

-        If the “it” person catches the whoopee before it reaches the finish line they win, if the group gets the whoopee back to the finish without the “it” person catches them, they win.  

o      If the person leads has fun with it, dancing along a bit during the chorus, the group will open and have more fun  

-       The chorus goes...Jig...Hello...Jig, Jig, Hello, Hello
 Jig...Hello...Jig, Jig, Hello, Hello. 

-       You say "Hey! (insert name of someone in the circle.)" 

-       They say "Hey what!" 

-       You say "Hey! (repeat name) 

-       They say "Hey what, hey what" 

o      (this part should keep the beat. if it doesn't you just get caught up later)  

 

-       You all say "SHOW us how you jig hello, SHOW (emphasize word to get everyone back on the rhythm) us how you jig hello. 

-       They say and do the action "My hands are high (Hands up), my feet are low (Hands down to knees), and this is how I jig hello. (On this last part they do their own dance movement to the beat)  

 

-       Optional: Now everyone repeats. "His/her hands are high (all hands up), his/her feet are low (hands down), and this is how he/she jigs hello. (everyone repeats movement that they did.)  

 

-       Now start over. Clapping also helps to get everyone back to the beat. Jig...Hello...Jig, Jig, Hello, Hello.     Jig...Hello...Jig, Jig, Hello, Hello.  

 

-       The last person who did the jig starts by calling the next persons name.

Steps

-       Form a circle 

-       Leaders start the game to provide an example.   

 

Option 1: 

o      First player does the name association 

o      Next player says the previous peoples’ associations and their own 

o      Last player should say all the names & their associations.  

o      Then, ask whether anyone else wants to try doing all the names & associations  

 

Option 2:  

o      Either first do Option 1, or simply go around the circle and each person shares their own name & alliteration 

o      Next, the leader starts by saying their own name & alliteration, then say another player’s name & alliteration (to a set beat)

o      The player who the leader named, then does their own name & alliteration & sends to another person (to the set beat)

§  Example: (Leader Libby) Libby Lama, Brigid Bird; (Participant Brigid) Brigid Bird, Heather Hen.  

o      This process continues around the circle. 

o      If someone does not follow the beat, they are out & can continue to participate by cheering on others. 

-       Put on your name-tag  

-       Come up with three facts to tell people about yourself 

-       Once you tell another person your facts and hear their facts, you both switch tags (identities).  

-       You must now walk around and introduce yourself as the other person with their 3 facts    

o      Either a time requirement (between 1 and 3 minutes) OR certain number of people to interview (3 or 5) 

-       At the end, everyone introduces who they are by the end time 

o      The real person steps forward and corrects any errors    

Note: Works well with larger groups.

-       Purpose: It helps to enhance the emotional connection between participants; also, for participants to reflect on where they started, where they are now, and how they got there

 

Steps:  

-       Draw a horizontal bar on a whiteboard that represents time   

o      Participants can choose when the timeline starts and stops (ex: freshman yr. to senior yr.)  

-       Have each participant draw a line chart which reflects the highs and lows they have had at each year throughout the timeline  

-       Also, you can have the participants draw a line into the future which includes their hopes, aspirations, and dreams. 

This continues, where each pass alternates between determining what the picture was and drawing what was described. It is important that each turn only reveals the words or picture from the previous round. Separate sheets or pads of paper may be used if that is easier than one sheet of paper, but they should be passed together.

When the paper is back to the original owner, each member reveals what was written and drawn.

Purpose: This activity tends to create a lot of laughter and is an excellent ice-breaker at parties or before long meetings where you want people to be comfortable with each other. The drawings and interpretations tend to bring out discussion and jokes.

Give each member of your team three cards with the same number on them so that every team member has a set of numbers different from every other player. One person will have all 1’s, while another might have all 10’s. The goal is to accomplish the tasks in a set amount of time so that whoever is left will get a prize based on the total value of the tasks completed.

However, in order to “do” the task, they must get people together whose numbered cards add up to the value on the task. Once a card is used, it can’t be used again. And once a team member has used up all their cards, they are taken out of the game and out of the running for the prize.

Ideally, there are more tasks and values than can be fulfilled by the cards your team possesses. They must determine which tasks to do, and which cards to use up. Ultimately, not every task can be completed, and not everyone can be a winner. The goal is to get the highest total task value (for the best prize), and work together to achieve it knowing that in order to do so, some will miss out.

Purpose: This rather painful game helps your team work together, understanding both strategy and self-sacrifice. Hopefully, once the game is over you’ll see that everyone has some kind of prize or reward, but it’s best to allow the team to not know that during game play.

Take the remaining member and place them inside the triangle. Let them choose to face whatever direction they want to, and instruct your team to remember exactly where they were in relation to the spinner. They should note who they were standing next to, and how they fit into the triangle shape based on where the spinner is facing.

The spinner should begin to slowly spin around. Without warning, the spinner should stop and stand still. At that point, the team has a set amount of time to reassemble into place so that the end result is a triangle situated correctly according to whatever direction the spinner chose to face.

Purpose: This activity is a great way to get the blood-pumping and to get your team to work together. They need to remember where they belong on the triangle, and help others, too, in order to finish in time.

What’s the point?
Steer the conversation towards specific changes being made within your group or the topic you are discussing. Examine how tricky it is to cross your arms in different positions and equally how tricky it is to cope with change. Show understanding that the necessary changes may be uncomfortable at first.

What’s the point?
Encourage your participants to be more open-minded towards changing long-standing methods by The Alien at Dinner. This exercise helps to point out that just because something is accepted, does not mean it is the best or only way of doing something and that doing things the way they’ve always been done is not enough justification for resisting better methods.

What’s the point?
Doing this exercise will force participants to be flexible, communicate, and work together. After the exercise is over, follow up with an open discussion on how teams were able to adapt to changes and what benefits came from their new members or new specifications. Be sure to go over how they were able to do so.

Repeat until one team reaches a desired number of points (or whenever time runs out). This activity is a good way to learn names. 

Materials needed to play Art Effects:

To set up the game start by getting a headcount of who all will be playing try to get an even number of people for teams and have an extra to be the critic. Write down random words that can be described — like goose or pizza — on slips of paper and hand them out as everyone comes in the door. Be sure to be stocked with a pencil sharpener and enough supplies for all the drawers.

Non-competitive:

Pick out or have drawers volunteer from the group and then randomly select a partner for them to pair with. Each partner should have a few items to describe to their drawer. Once the partners are decided have everyone take a spot away from each other with the drawer and describer sitting back to back. Each pair will attempt to draw one item without the item being named, only described. Set a time limit or a word limit to keep the game interesting.

If desired you can switch descriptors and drawers out in a rotation, so everyone will get a chance to work together during the game.

Competitive:

Set up the exact same way you would in a non-competitive game, but have a stricter time limit or word amount. Give each player in charge of descriptions at least five slips of paper. The drawer will then have to figure out each item and put them together in a creative light on paper. Whichever team has a more accurate drawing of the word chosen by the describer is the winner.

*NOTE: The drawer can not ask questions in either version.

Divide the group into teams of three to six. Pass out the paper clip (or other small object) to the each group and send them off. When time expires, the judging process begins. Each team presents their item before the entire group. They explain why their item is biggest and best. At the end, choose winners for each of the three categories, or judge the items in any other way you wish. This activity involves good teamwork and creativity as each team coordinates their efforts and decides what strategies they will approach when playing. Camaraderie will be built, and surprises will come out of the activity. Who knows, a group might be able to turn a paper clip into a car! Well, maybe a toy car.

Give the people instructing a bag filled with odd objects and start the clock.

When time’s up, the story is folded so the last line shows.

Shuffle the papers, then distribute – so everyone in both groups gets a slip.

The remaining pairs split into two new teams, for a new round featuring new charades.

The last pair standing in the final round wins.

Groups will be formed and all the groups will be given a similar scenario to re-enact. This can be anything from random scenarios to actual news, movie or TV shows. The group with the best scene wins. Multiple scenarios encompassing several rounds can be used as well.

Paint me a picture acts in a similar fashion to lights, camera, action. The difference is that instead of making a short play and presenting them one by one, all groups will have to make a scene and then freeze once preparation time is up. The group that can make the best picture gets the point.

Ask all of the members to form a circle and then put a hula hoop through one arm before connecting everyone by holding hands. The goal is to make the hula hoop go around the circle once. This requires everyone to be ready to help when someone is struggling to move the hula hoop.

You can create a fence by just using a rope and tying it to two objects. Each group while holding hands must be able to cross the fence while not separating and not touching the fence either. This quick activity teaches everyone on how to move as a team and help one another.
