She was the second wife of Nelson Mandela and served as a Member of Parliament from 1994 to 2003, and from 2009 until her death. She was also a deputy minister of arts and culture from 1994 to 1996. She had a huge impact on fighting the apartheid due to her tremendous actions. She was deeply involved in activism and resistance against the oppressive apartheid regime. For example, she took part in a mass action in October 1958 which mobilized women to protest against the Apartheid government's infamous pass laws. It was similar to the protest in Pretoria in August 1956.
