"Guess what?" Billy shouted. "I raped you!" I turned around and saw him standing there by the car, looking hurt and angry but not as tall as usual. I searched my mind for a cutting comeback, but since I didn't know what "rape" meant, all I could think to say was "Big deal!"

This picture of children playing with paint shows the innocence and purity of how children should be raised. In the book Jeannette gets sexually assaulted by Billy and she is still young and naive that she doesn't fully grasp what happened.

"I wonder what life will be like now," I said to Lori.
"The same," she said. "He tried stopping before, but it never lasted."
"This time it will."
"How do you know?"
"It's his present to me."

This picture shows a crack on the floor with the word promise symbolizes the promise Rex had with Jeannette that he would quit drinking. A lot of the problems that they had was because of Rex's addictions and drinking was one of them. Jeannette genuinely believed he would stop, but in a moment of weakness Rex broke his promise.

"He groped me! And he's wanking off!" Mom cocked her head and looked concerned. "Poor Stanley," she said. "He's so lonely."
"But it was gross!"
Mom asked if I was okay. I shrugged and nodded. "Well, there you go," she said. She said that sexual assault was a crime of perception. "If you don't think you're hurt, then you aren't," she said. "So many women make such a big deal out of these things. But you're stronger than that." She went back to her crossword puzzle.

In this picture it shows a black and white photo of a girl looking out a window showing the sadness and possible confusion Jeannette had when her mother didn't seem to be bothered with the fact she was being touched by her uncle. The audacity this woman had to tell her child that she was overreacting and actually showed sympathy for Uncle Stanley is disgusting.

We talked about the old days some and, finally, it was time to go. I kissed them both, and at the door, I turned to look at Dad one more time.
"Hey," he said. He winked and pointed his finger at me. "Have I ever let you down?"
He started chucking because he knew there was only one way I could answer that question. I just smiled. And then I closed the door.

This picture of a heart being put together symbolizes Jeannette coming to terms with her troubled past. She learns that she isn't going to receive a proper apology from her parents and with that acceptance she can move on with her life.

"He treats me fine, Dad," I said. What I wanted to say was that I knew Eric would never try to steal my paycheck or throw me out the window, that I'd always been terrified I'd fall for a hard-drinking, hell-raising, charismatic scoundrel like you, Dad, but I'd wound up with a man who was exactly the opposite.

This picture shows Jeannettes life with her father, which was crazy and unsafe and her life with Eric at the time where everything is calm and predictable.

We started talking about some of Dad's great escapades: letting me pet the cheetah, taking us Demon Hunting, giving us stars for Christmas.
"We should drink a toast to Rex," John said.
Mom stared at the ceiling, miming perplexed thought. "I've got it." She held up her glass. "Life with your father was never boring"

In this picture it shows the word family and an infinity symbol showing that although the Walls family went through a lot of hardships they continue to stay close and be there for one another.
