This Padlet will teach you about the Maya and about their culture. The section 23.4 was about the peasants family, marriage customs, the special occasions, and the duties they had for the men and the women in the family.
The Mayan women in the peasants families would have to cook, and the daughters would help their mothers. The women would also have to do house work/chorus. The men would work on the fields, with their sons. If they weren't busy they would go hunting and trap animals.
The men would marry around 20 and the girls would marry around 14. The number 3 was special to the girls, because it represented the 3 stones of the fire place. The number 4 was special for boys, because it would represented the 4 sides of the plot of land where a boy would spend his life. The rituals and ceremonies was an important daily life to the Maya's.
Video Link: https://app.discoveryeducation.com/learn/videos/73bf9370-e4d6-4759-9d46-13a8d37af639/

This Padlet will teach you about the Class Structure of the Maya.
The Maya lived in a city-state. In each of these city states, there is a ruler which is at the top of the social structure. The Ruler rules the city state with the help of his advisers. The ruler always decided where and when they would go to war. During religious ceremonies, the Mayan rulers wore headdresses that were as tall as a person. The next layer is the social class structure were the nobles and priests. The nobles and priests were the only people that knew how to read and write.Priests maintained favor with the gods while the nobles served as officials. Priests were often known to be mathematicians, astronomers and healers while nobles tended to lead peasant armies in the times of war. The third level of the social structure were the merchants and artisans. Merchants mainly traded and imported stones such as Jade and obsidian. They also imported opal, which the Maya used as incense for religious ceremonies. Another thing they imported was quetzals, which were mainly used in headdresses. Artisans made many objects that payed tribute to the gods. They painted books, murals, and created sculptures. Artisans were also skilled weavers and potters. The second to last level in the social structure was the peasants. They grew crops such as maize, squash, and beans to feed their population. In growing season, men would stay outside to work in the fields while the women stayed close to home preparing the food. These peasants built things such as temples and pyramids. What the peasants got in exchange for their hard work was an invitation to a royal to attend a royal wedding or to attend a religious event. The last level of the social structure was the slaves. Some free people became slaves, but for the most part, people were born into slavery. The maya would sometimes sell their children to be slaves when they needed to feed their families. Some criminals were made to be slaves as a punishment. These salves mainly did manual labor.Overall, slaves weren't treated badly at all, and had easier lives than peasants.

link to video:

Mayan farmers faced a lot of hard challenges.Cop failure may have been one of the reasons that the mayan civilization collapsed. One of the challenges the maya faced was not growing enough food for large population. The maya responded to this challenge by developing new and different agriculture techniques. In the highlands they made terraces into the hills to create a flat land while planting, while in the lowlands, which were swampy at the time, they built raised-earth platforms surrounded by canals to drain off any excess water. They maya had a technique called the slash and burn agriculture, with this kind of technique the soil started to wear out. When the population started to increase again, they had trouble growing enough food and started to use house-hold gardens for more available food.
