  • As the wars in Europe raged, France and Britain continued to impress American merchants and steal cargo.
  • In order to protect the U.S. and maintain neutrality Thomas Jefferson drafted and pushed the Embargo Act through Congress in 1807.
  • This law forbid any and all trade with the world’s countries.
  • After two years of economic depression and failed enforcement Thomas  Jefferson replaced the
    Embargo act with the Non-intercourse act.

  • During the the french and indian war , France surrendered a large part of louisiana to Spain and almost all of its remaining lands to Great Britain.
  • Spain’s acquisition didn’t have a big impact since it still allowed the United States to travel the Mississippi River and use New Orleans  as a trade port.
  • Then Napoleon Bonaparte took power in France in 1799 and wanted to regain France’s territory in the United States.

  • Sacagawea had been kidnapped by Hidatsa Indians at age 12 and then sold to Charbonneau.
