This quote stood out to me because I believe that it is at the heart of language teaching. As ELL teachers we strive to give students the means to express themselves in a new language. Their stories already exist inside them and as educators we work to give students resources and tools to express those stories in a new language. It speaks to the importance of making sure students practice their expressive language skills as much they do receptive language skills, so that they have an outlet for the stories that live inside them. Working in a high needs area and alongside students who have had to leave their home countries in the hope of finding better lives in the United States, I’ve seen firsthand how strongly students react to having the opportunity to talk about their personal experiences. You see it when they have access to materials that are representative of them (in books and videos and the teachers alongside them in the classroom). Providing students with the ability to represent and express themselves gives them a greater sense of engagement in their own lives, and it also produces material that other students can view as models of what they can accomplish.
