Rationale for Text Selection and Building Conceptual Knowledge:

Each text in this Text Set has been specifically chosen to aide in building a child's conceptual knowledge of Recycling. The books have been ordered to increase students knowledge of recycling as the unit progresses. To introduce and familiarize students with the topic of recycling, students will listen to a book called Trashy Town. This book establishes the idea of trash and how it is brought to the dump. Building on what students learned from Trashy Town, students will then listen to a book called Michael Recycle. Michael Recycle is a fun book that continues the idea of cleaning up your local town while introducing the topic of recycling. After students have been introduced to the topic of recycling, students will continue to develop conceptual knowledge via two nonfiction books. What a Waste and Recycling Earth's Resources both dive deeper into the topic of recycling by stating how to recycle, what to recycle, and the environmental effect if we don't recycle or correctly dispose of trash.

Key Vocabulary:

Compost: pile of old leaves, vegetables, and plants that can be added to soil to help make plants grow better. (Found in Recycling Earth's Resources, pg. 17)
Pollution: when harmful things get into the environment and hurts living things. (Found in What a Waste pgs. 3-6)
Recycle: taking old or used items and turning them into new items. (Found in Michael Recycle pg. 7)
Resources: something found in nature that humans can use. (Found in Recycling Earth's Resources pg. 4)
Trash: unwanted or used items that are thrown away. (Found in Trashy Town pg. 4)

*To help students build knowledge of these words I will do a few different things. Before starting the unit and reading the texts, I will create a Word Wall of the key vocabulary words listed above. On the Word Wall I will pair each word with a visual picture to help students establish meaning. Students may refer to this Word Wall anytime during the unit. When it comes time to read the first text (Trashy Town), I will go over each word on the Word Wall and provide students with the definitions both orally and visually. Then we will practice spelling each word aloud an on paper. While listening to the texts, students will act as detectives as they try to identify the vocabulary words. When the students identify a key vocabulary word I will ask what them what it means. As the unit progresses, students will participate in stimulating activities and discussions in order to continue to build understanding and test their knowledge of concepts and vocabulary words.

To help ELL students understand each word, a language translator will be provided (Dalton & Grisham, 2011). *

Mr. Gilly is the trashman of Trashy Town. It is his job to ride around town in his big trash truck and collect all the trash. He picks up trash at the school, the park, the pizza parlor, and other local establishments until his big trash truck is full. Once the truck is full, he happily brings the trash to the dump. Trashy Town features a predictable and rhythmic storyboard as Mr. Gilly sings and encourages children to engage in reading.

Discussion Prompts:
1. Why is it important for Mr. Gilly to pick up the trash in Trashy Town?
2. How are people in Trashy Town helping Mr. Gilly?

This nonfiction story informs children on how we use Earth's resources in our everyday life. As we use these resources we usually throw them away. If we keep throwing these used resources away then our trash will take up too much space. Instead of throwing them away, this book encourages bringing items such as bottles, glass, paper, and metal to recycling centers to be turned into new items. Following the suggestions made in this book can ensure we have enough of Earth's resources in the future.

Discussion Prompts:
1. What are some items that can be recycled?
2. How can you help save your local environment?
