In the early 1900s, African Americans looked to migrate out of the rural south and to the urban north. African Americans wanted to leave the harsh conditions of the south, while also searching for a better economic opportunity up in the northern cities and factories. These economic opportunities led African Americans to believe in a better future and life in the north.

Law 1: Ravenstein's first law states that every Migration flow generates a return or counter Migration. This idea can be applied to the Great Migration because some white families did not like the idea of living in the same neighborhoods and communities as African Americans. These families would move away from the large groups of incoming African Americans due to their racist views.

Law 2: The second law states that the majority of migrants move a shorter rather than a longer distance. The Great Migration was no exception to this, as the majority of the African Americans moved up north, as opposed to moving to the west.

Law 3: Migrants who move longer distances tend to be in bigger cities. During the Great Migration, many African Americans moved north to the cities because they were able to find more industrial jobs.

Law 4: The fourth law states that urban residents are less likely to migrate than inhabitants of rural areas. During the Great Migration many migrants had moved out of small, rural, and suburban towns to big cities like Chicago, Detroit, and others to find jobs.

Law 5: The fifth law deals more with international migration, very few migrants had left the country during the Great Migration, they merely moved north or in some cases west.
