I believe that Patroclus is hero because he sacrificed his life on the battlefield in order to give the Greek soldiers hope. Achilles should have been the one to fight but Patroclus did it for him in order to save as many Achaeans as he can. He said "I could be a saving light for the Danaans. Give me your armour to buckle round my shoulder..." (Johnston 98). Basically, Achilles was acting cowardly by refusing to fight in the Trojan War. Patroclus could not stand that any longer and took action in order to save the Danaans.
Patroclus' actions can be compared to the actions of the man in the water because both of them sacrificed their lives to save others. In the man in the water article, the author said "nature cared nothing about the five passengers. Our man, on the other hand, cared totally"(Rosenblatt). The man in the water made the decision to give his life so that others may live. He made a last stand even though at some point he knew his fate.

I believe that the man in the water was hero because he made an extremely difficult decision in order to save the lives of others. He could have taken the lifeline to save himself, instead he gave it to other passengers until they are all safe.

I can compare the actions of The Man In the Water to those of Achilles because both are willing to go into or stay in peril even if they know that they are going to die. The difference is that the other five people on the plane meant nothing to the main in the water but Achilles is doing it as a personal vendetta for Patroclus' death. Still, both their actions are commendable.

Man in The Water Quote:
"For at some moment in the water he must have realized that he would not live if he continued to
hand over the rope and ring to others" (Roger Rosenblatt).
Knowing death was coming soon, the man still gave the life jackets to the others.

Achilles Reaction after hearing about Patroclus' death:
"Then let me die, since I could not prevent the death of my companion...He needed me there to protect him from destruction" (Johnston 124).
Even though Achilles is acting from a feeling of guilt, he is, like the man in the water, gonna go out and join the war, which he knows will bring about his demise.

Dylan, Hector

Hector was a hero because he not only fought for his fellow Trojans and his home, Troy, but he fought for his family as well. Hector put his life in danger to ensure that the people he cared for were able to continue to live in safety and peace. As a result of his selflessness, Hector knew that his pride was a only a secondary factor of his fighting in the Trojan War, and that the well-being of his people was the greatest priority. Instead of staying behind to live happily with his wife and son, as his wife, Andromache, wanted him to do, Hector left them to fight for their protection, so that they could live long, happy, and free lives. Similarly, the "Man in the Water" did not prioritize his own safety over the safety of other five survivors of Air Florida Flight 90's crash on January 13, 1982. Instead, the "Man in the Water" gave the others around him an opportunity to survive by passing up his own opportunity of being saved. Faced with the same dangers and the other five people, and stuck in the same, desperate situation, the man made a difficult decision to do what he thought was best: caring for the other people and saving their lives.

Quotes:
The Iliad
"'My pain focuses on you, when one of the bronze-clad Achaeans leads you off in tears, ends your days of freedom (...) May I lie dead, hidden deep under a burial mound, before I hear about your screaming, as you are dragged away.'" (Johnston, 48-49)

The Man in the Water
"Man in nature. The man in the water. For its part, nature cared nothing about the five passengers. Our man, on the other hand, cared totally." (Rosenblatt)
