Consequently, this also means that any individual is allowed the use of their mother tongue, although this is not explicitly stated. In the Universal Declaration of Linguistic Rights it is declared that the right to use one’s mother tongue shall not be violated by anyone in regard to its use, neither privately nor publicly. Therefore, linguistic minorities have a right to education in their native language as well as cultural knowledge of their community. This also applies to immigrants, according to Swedish law.

Therefore, people living in areas where languages other than their mother tongue are spoken shall have the right to receive education in their native language as well as cultural knowledge. Immigrants are entitled to these rights according to Swedish legislation, which were put into action by the Swedish parliament.

After reading the linguistic human rights, one would assume that the laws are meant for immigrants in Sweden. These rights are not always put into practice by the Swedish society, proving that theory differs from practice.

When considering the linguistic human rights listed above, the right to preserve one’s mother tongue and to learn the territorial language, one could assume that the laws are upheld for immigrants in Sweden.

People shall be given the right to education in their mother tongue and cultural knowledge about their language community, irrespectively of the official language spoken in their area. Immigrants are entitled to these rights according to Swedish legislation. Officially, one might assume that the linguistic human rights as described above are met for immigrants in Sweden. However, one must consider how these laws are implemented in Swedish society. Which is nice.
