I hear many individuals say that racism has been eliminated from schools, or undermining the issue of race in school. But, the truth is racism is still present, and it is something that I believe cannot be entirely eliminated from our society. Democratic schools should assist students in becoming prepared for a democratic society and life. According to uvm.edu, schools should grant students " the ability to think critically, a sense of efficacy, a commitment to compassionate action, and a desire to actively participate in political life by engaging in local decision-making processes, lobbying, voting, etc., as well as the basic need to be able to read, write and do arithmetic." I think under this, schools should be successful at preparing students to be socially and academically prepared for the democratic society that they live in. I am unsure who gets to decide but I think it should be the education systems we place in charge to ensure all schools are following certain standards and preparing students to proper standards. I am worried about how a society could begin to add these democratic values into schools without causing backlash from people who are against democracy or believe our schools should not enforce any political views. Something that excites me about school is simply just learning and learning new concepts. Although it can get hard to understand some material it is always exciting once you do. We can not treat some students as better than others, we have to see students as blank slates, that all have the opportunity to succeed. As it stands right now, it seems that each day, classrooms become a more and more increasingly political battleground, and while this isn't necessarily a new phenomena, it continues to mean that students will be the ones most negatively impacted by it. For instance, back in the 1950s, it was the discrimination against POC, in particular, black individuals, which found its way into the classroom. This negatively impacted students who were POC in particular, but also had longlasting negative impacts non POC students who ended up growing up that it was okay to be discriminatory against those who simply had a different skin color. In today's world, it is currently a fight against the inclusion of LGBTQ+ youth, which will result in a similar type of outcome going into the future for current students. What I would hope to see for the future is the depolarization and de-politicalness of our classrooms, so that they can simply remain centers of learning and development. Of course, this is easier said than done, and in some ways may be a catch-22, since one could argue if politics is an extension of morals, and school is one area where morals are fostered, then does that mean school has to become strictly moraless, which would have a negative impact upon all other areas of learning? As a future teacher I hope that I can make sure that all of my students feel comfortable in their learning environment and help them whenever they might feel overwhelmed or stressed about anything. Children, teens and even adults won't look forward to going to school anymore because of the pressure of getting good grades with a more difficult curriculum.
