Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu was born January 18, 1689, in Bordeaux France. He died February 10th, 1755 in Paris. At the age of 66, he died on February 10, 1755, in Paris

He lived in Bordeaux until his mother died where he left Paris and practiced law. He traveled throughout Europe to many places like Naples, Germany, Holland, Florence, Rome, and parts of London.

One year after he married Jeanne de Lartigue his uncle, the Baron de Montesquieu died and left him his title.

He wrote The Spirit of the Laws, which became his most famous work and influenced the ideas of the government towards others.

He moved to Paris, France where he gained access to the Court of Louis XV and became a close associate of the Duke of Berwick. Together they looked into scandalous excesses that were part of Parisian aristocratic society.

Montesquieu did not agree with the way the government was. He believed that instead of having one nation ruled by a King or a Queen, he believed a legislative and executive branch would be more efficient.

"The political liberty of the subject is a tranquillity of mind, arising from opinion each person has of his safety. In order to have this liberty, it is requisite the government be so constituted as one man need not be afraid of another" (Montesquieu )

Montesquieu was influenced by his schools, he enjoyed learning at each University he attended and learned more and more about laws and the government.
