For me, this statement means that all children are capable of learning high level content no matter their starting point. Many teachers write students off right away because of their current level of understanding. This quote tells me that teachers need to make use of the foundation the student has and build upon, providing the necessary supports to help them make progress.

"I believe all kids can learn" ties with having a growth mindset. All students are capable of learning at a high-level; however, for some students it make take them longer to get there with extra practice that is needed to understand. Aside from having a growth mindset, teachers need to provide quality instruction that allows the students to have a conceptual understanding of mathematics instead of a procedural understanding.

What "I believe all kids can learn" means to me. All students can learn in spite of environmental factors and learning challenges with high-quality instruction. For example, when teachers build relationships with their students and provide high-level lessons that are relative to students' lives, all students learn. Students may learn at different rates, but they all can learn and achieve academic success. When students feel welcomed, loved and free to explore the curriculum and express themselves, the culture of the classroom opens the door to a world in which all students can experience a quality education. We know that there can be temporary set backs in this statement such as in war-torn areas of the world where children are in constant fear of attack. And some children (who have severe ID) may not learn exactly the same curriculum as most other students, but they still can learn at a high level for them.

This means that I, as the teacher, need to change my instruction to be able to reach each and every student.

I do believe that all students can learn, but in a unique way. I cannot teach my advanced students in the same way that I teach my sped students. This is why sped students have accommodations that will allow them to be successful with the math content or any content. I know this is true because I have sped students who can catch onto some math concepts quicker than my other students. Therefore, I do believe that all students can learn but they learn in different ways and not at the same pace.

I do believe all kids can learn. As an educator for 25 years, I've worked with students from all kinds of backgrounds as well as many different "labels," from gifted to developmentally delayed to autistic, just to name a few. In my current job, I work with the "students who struggle the most" and have seen first hand how much growth is possible. Equity is key here. Equity doesn't mean the same, but means that all children deserve opportunities and experiences that will help them reach their potential as learners.

"I believe all students can learn"-this makes me think of quality instruction. As educators, we have to know the curriculum on a deep level so that we can be prepared to teach it in a well-thought out manner. It makes me think of teaching to the entire class and on a high level where students are productively struggling. The collaboration of students is necessary, as well, because hearing new ideas from peers means they are learning. The final piece, in my opinion, is that teachers may not set limitations to a student's learning. If you don't let them try, how else will you find out they can fly?

If educators did not believe this statement, why would we show up to school day after day? All students can learn given the time and support that each individual student needs to be successful. One of my favorite quotes from my undergraduate studies is from an unknown author... "All children are gifted. Some just open their packages sooner than others."
