Hook: Imagine what it would be like for someone to have blood running out from their body everyday, to work from before the sun came up until after they were too tired to even move, to be treated if they were nothing more than property, and to be taken away from their family before they are old enough to know what family is.
Background Information: The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is a book by Frederick Douglass. It was published on May 1, 1845. Douglass was a slave who escaped slavery, and went on to be a famous abolitionist. He learned to read when he was a slave by becoming friends with poor white boys and giving them food in exchange for reading lessons. He borrowed papers from a free black sailor, and used those to escape slavery. He gave a lot of speeches along with writing his narrative, which were his weapons for ending slavery.
Thesis Statement: Along with the use of his figurative language, Douglass uses his narrative to reveal the effects of slavery on slaves and slave owners, which supports his position to end slavery.
