These trials were referred to as the Salem Witch Trials and they were hearings for people accused of practicing witchcraft. The accusations of the townspeople were founded on the belief that all humans were in a constant struggle between the powers of good and evil. The crucible represented how the townspeople of Salem were grounded in the Puritan way which was strict. They believed that any differences in people's behavior made other's suspicious. They were influenced by John Calvin, who strictly adhered to religious doctrine. They believed in a theocracy, where there was no separation between church and state. They wanted a government where God was the ruler, not the king. It was the Puritans who shaped who we are as Americans and what we believe in yet today. They lived a simple life the way God intended. The Puritans did  not have an understanding of science so when some of the people got sick they blamed the devil. The belief was that people afflicted by witch craft exhibited certain symptoms. It was a time of congregational strife in Salem Village. Calvin was one of a group of theologians who protested against the Catholic Church as the ultimate authority. Puritans shared the Calvinist belief of total depravity which meant the only way to get to heaven was to be chosen by God and to have faith that He would save you from eternal punishment. Some people were chosen to be saved, while others were not..it was part of being the "elect" (saved).
