The First Great Awakening was focused almost entirely on religion in the early development of the United States. The Second Great Awakening also had some religious undertones, with people like Charles Grandison Finney who empowered women at his sermons.

The first passage essentially condemned the ways in which women were trying to advocate for women's rights. The speaker says that their movement is a violation of the Declaration and women should stay in their place at the homestead. The second passage is a contrasting opinion, where the speaker says that men feel like they are a key component in a woman's life, but she differs that opinion in saying that women are just fine without the men.

A culture that developed in the 1820s focused on the reform of US prisons. Early on, states were abolishing debtors prisons, but they were also softening on legal codes. They reduced punishments and made others less severe. People like Dorothy Dix advocated for increased living conditions for those who were mentally ill, which in turn increased asylum/prison conditions.
