Everyday we perform a series of actions and motions that become a habit, such as driving to work or cleaning your room. In music, Ratliff, explains, there is a sort of this repetitive motion that builds music as well. This motion, however, can be much less repetitive and may be more prevalent as a motif in the music. Ratliff uses this idea of a musical motif several times in this chapter to help explain how one musical passage, or a variation, can reoccur to build up to climax in the piece and then to the resolution. It is important to link back certain passages to each other to  have that secure build up in music. I agree with Ratliff.
